Perfectly placed in the countryside of the Northern Lake District amongst other similar lodges. Near Penrith, Keswick, and the lakes of Ullswater, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. Local animals such as Red Squirrels, Pheasants, Rabbits, Hares and Deer wander about. We have our place professionally cleaned after each guest with bedding and towels included in the price.
The Lodge has been described by previous visitors as clean, comfortable, cosy, beautifully appointed, relaxing and very good value for money. The Lodge is perfectly placed in the northern Lake District to explore the whole region by car, not far from towns Penrith, Carlisle and Keswick nestling on the fringe of Greystoke Forest. Ullswater, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake are within easy reach as are many delightful climbs - Catbells, Blencathra and Latrigg to name just a few. Castlerigg Stone Circle, just outside Keswick, is perhaps the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles. The Lodge is our private holiday home and is comfortably furnished and equipped to a high standard. There are 2 twin bedrooms sleeping 4 people comfortably, fitted kitchen with integrated appliances, open plan lounge/dining area with flat screen TV, DVD and Hi-fi. Landline and Free Wifi Internet connection. The Lodge benefits from a south facing decked balcony equipped with patio table and chairs from which you can relax and enjoy the abundant wildlife.

Tuvimos una estancia fabulosa con nuestras dos pequeñas personas, perfectamente acondicionadas, la ubicación es estupenda, Ralph fue excelente con sus comunicaciones y el espacio es tranquilo. En particular, nos encantó la ingeniosa instalación para colgar la ropa #mentalnoteforfuturehome home y tuvimos una estancia perfecta aquí. Si te estás preguntando si quedarte aquí, no lo dudaría.   • Nuestra estancia en el lugar de Ralph no me decepcionó. Fabuloso alojamiento en una excelente ubicación. Hay mucho para ver y hacer en los alrededores y un tiro de piedra de los lagos. El alojamiento en sí era acogedor, estaba limpio y equipado con artículos de alta calidad, desde ropa de cama hasta accesorios de cocina. Viajamos livianos e incluso con dos niños pequeños remolcados no había nada que pudiéramos haber pedido. Desde juegos, DVD, música y libros hasta todo lo que pueda necesitar para preparar una comida de 3 platos o un picnic, este lugar lo tiene todo. El paquete de bienvenida completo cubrió todas las bases. La comunicación de Ralph fue excelente y su consejo para visitar el círculo de piedra del Castillo Rigg fue muy apreciado. Recomendaríamos encarecidamente el lugar de Ralph a cualquiera que desee una escapada fácil a los lagos en un lugar de calidad.

  • Este lugar es absolutamente impresionante y estaba impecablemente limpio a la llegada. Las camas eran muy cómodas y la casa era preciosa y cálida. Las vistas desde las habitaciones eran hermosas y el gran jardín detrás de la propiedad era ideal para los perros. Súper cocina y cómodos sofás para acurrucarse frente a la estufa de leña. Los dos baños eran de un tamaño decente y los 5 de nosotros conseguimos tener una ducha en la mañana sin que el agua caliente se agotara. Corto viaje en automóvil al pintoresco Allonby y Silloth, que también fue perfecto para los perros. En general, recomendaría encarecidamente esta hermosa estancia en el campo ya que no nos podemos quejar. Justo lo que necesitábamos para una noche familiar!

    Moor Row House was our family home. It is a huge place, part Victorian Mansion and part Cumbrian farmhouse. It has bags of character and is a great setting for a get together with family or friends.
    There is masses of space! There is a huge farmhouse kitchen with Aga and a large laundry room. The house has two sitting rooms, one with working fireplaces, games room, orangery, eight bedrooms and five bathrooms (two are ensuite). The house is furnished with older style furniture, but mattresses are all recently renewed. It is not immaculate, but is comfortable and full of character.
    This is a quiet area of a beautiful county. We are situated between the lakes and the sea with views of the fells and of Scotland. Amazing sunsets.

  • Una hermosa y antigua casa de campo con mucho espacio para un grupo grande y características originales. La casa era muy acogedora y tranquila, y solo a 5 minutos en automóvil de Wigton para suministros, si fuera necesario. ¡A los niños les encantaba jugar a las escondidas! Puede acomodar fácilmente a un grupo grande en la cocina para las comidas y sentarse juntos en la sala de estar para socializar. El espacio del horno (solo Aga) era limitado para cocinar para 15 personas y no pudimos conectarnos al wifi, pero en general disfrutamos mucho de nuestra estancia. Gracias.

Era un lugar perfecto para regresar después de largas caminatas (húmedas), y muy cálido por dentro con la estufa de leña, ¡especialmente cuando había fuertes lluvias y fuertes vientos afuera! Las camas son muy cómodas, y el camping está muy bien ubicado con excelentes comodidades en el lugar y el famoso pub Old Dungeon Ghyll ubicado muy cerca. Sin duda volveremos.

    Inside - All rooms are spacious - The Kitchen includes a washing machine / dishwasher / Microwave - Oven - Grill / 4no gas hob with all cooking facilities, plates, dishes including Tea, coffee & fresh milk. The living area has a double Settee & a single Cosy chair, TV (Freeview), DVD player, Coal effect fire and access to free wifi (Single bed provided here if 3 staying). The Bedroom area has a double bed, wardrobes, drawers and bedside table leading to an Ensuite with Power Shower (Sorry no bath), WC and basin. Outside - Patio, lawn, bistro table and 3 chairs to enjoy the relaxation sounds of the Stream and views of the abundence of Wildlife opposite in the gill. Our sheep often graze the field directly outside the Kitchen windows as well as the field opposite. Stabling for ponies are available, please contact the host for charges.
    It's a great location for walking, there is a footpath which takes you down to the river (approx 15 mins) without having to go on busy main roads, and there you'll find the Cumbria Way with peaceful riverside paths. During the 15 minute walk you can take in the views to the Pennines & Scotland. We have some laminated walking information at the property as well as plenty of Lake District books and Maps to give you some ideas to get started. There are handy back roads locally for cycling (CTC route within half a mile). There is a village store/Post Office/pub restaurant 2 miles from the property also lots of other good pubs and cafes between 2 and 10 miles away.

    Situated in the Holiday Village of Whitbarrow. Guests access all of the facilities which include a heated indoor Swimming Pool, Jacuzzi, Sauna, Gym, Bar, Restaurant, Putting Green and indoor play area for children. The balcony of the cottage overlooks the picturesque duck pond accessed from the open plan kitchen/diner and living room (with double sofa bed) on the first floor. Ground floor comprises of a double room with shower/wc en-suite, a twin room, and single bunks with a separate bathroom.
    It is half way between Penrith and Keswick and 10 minutes from Ullswater. There are a range of activities available on the Lake at Glenridding Sailing Centre such as Sailing, Canoeing and Kayaking. There are also Steamer boats which run regularly up and down the Lake for those who prefer something more sedate. The Waterfall walk to Aira Force is signposted from the road which runs along Ullswater. For the Hikers, Helvellyn and the High Street range are not far and there are plenty of shorter and lower level walks too. Whinlatter Forest is a 25 minute drive and has some epic Mountain Bike and Walking Trails. There is a travel cot and high chair available at the property.
    The property is on a specifically designed Holiday Village which also has a small hotel. Leisure facilities include a Heated Indoor Swimming Pool, Jacuzzi, Sauna, Gym, Bar, Restaurant, Putting Green, Outdoor Children's Play area, Giant Chess Set. The property is % miles from Ullswater where there are Steamers on the Lake and you can Sail or Canoe. There are other activites such as Fell Walking and Rock Climbing or you could hire a bike in Keswick and explore the Lake District. There are a wide variety of bars and restaurants in Keswick 11 miles away.

    The cottage has been recently refurbished to a high modern standard. Log Burner, carpets in bedrooms and living room. 1 King bedroom, 2 Twin Bedrooms and a large sofa bed sleeps 8 in total. All of the bedding is Egyptian Cotton. Front garden and back enclosed garden. 15 minutes slow walk into town. Pub over the road serving excellent food. Excellent base to explore the Lakes, do activities or simply relax. Pets are welcome max. 2. There is also a Travel Cot and High Chair available.
    Keswick is in the North of the beautiful English Lake District. It is a market town with an array of Bars, shops, restaurants and cafes. It is easily accessed by car from the M6 and A66. The nearest train station is Penrith from which you can get a local bus or a taxi. Walkers are close to Skiddaw, Blencathra and Latrigg to name but a few. The two nearest Lakes are Braithwaite and Derwentwater where watersports are available. Mountain bikers have access to Whinlatter Forest 10 minutes away and Grizedale Forest about an hour away. For those looking for culture, The Lakes Distillery, The Theatre on the Lake and Wordsworth's home of Grasmere (and the famouse Grasmere Gingerbread) are a short drive from the cottage taking in some magnificent scenery along the way.
    We are in the Beautiful National Park of the English Lake District. Keswick is on the two Lakes of Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water. There are water activities available on the Lakes such as Kayaking and Sailing. We are a short drive from Borrowdale where there is a huge range of Rock Climbing and Close to the Northern and Western Fells including Skiddaw for the hikers. Whinlatter Forest offers some superb Mountain Biking and Walking trails and is a 15 minute drive from the cottage. The cottage is in a residential area. It is set in private gardens and whilst it is near to a main road, it is secluded. Neighbours in the adjacent property are residents who spend part of their time here and the other part in a house in the South.

Although we are in a rural relaxed location we have all amenities needed with friendly hosts living on site to assist with anything. There is free WiFi.
    Close to the Lake District on the A595 we are an ideal location for tourists visiting the area or Scottish borders. Next to a well established restaurant you can enjoy a meal or the apartment has full catering equipment if you prefer. There are plenty of walks and the picturesque village of Dalston just 2 miles away.

    Located inside the Lake District National Park, you can experience true rural isolation and a little piece of heaven at your Canvas Lodge when glamping Cumbria. There are a plethora of walks on your doorstep, quiet beaches at the Solway Firth, and not to forget the beautiful world-renowned lakes of the Lake District, and nearby rivers. The Stobart family have farmed at Lake District Farm for over 20 years. Lake District is a traditional sheep and beef farm of 300 acres that is worked in a sustainable manner as part of the higher level Countryside Stewardship Scheme. John is passionate about his livestock, particularly his Highland cattle. The lambs in spring, prize winning Highland cattle and paddling in the stream, are all a stone's throw from the tents. Unfortunately, dogs cannot be accommodated. Christine is well known locally for her homemade produce, available at the pretty farm pantry in the little barn by the tents. One guest's comment represented exactly what they aim for: 'John made us laugh, Christine's food made us drool, and Sarah taught us how to feed lambs. It was truly one of the best holidays we've ever had'. In the lovingly restored barn, the hot showers are downstairs and the farm pantry above. Another rich slice of rural England is served up almost every week in the area from June until September in the form of agricultural shows. You might even see John there with his prize livestock, as he is a regular trophy winner. Lake District Farm is a short stroll to the unspoilt village of Hesket Newmarket, which boasts a lovely children's play area, a riverside walk and the very popular Old Crown Pub, well worth a visit along with the Hesket Newmarket Brewery Cooperative. Please note: there is no electricity in this location

    This farmhouse cottage was converted from a 17th Century barn, adjoining a farmhouse. The accommodation is graded 4 Star by Visit England and has a large lounge/dining room, king size bed, shower room and fitted kitchen. The first floor games room with table tennis, pool and air hockey. We have good Internet connectivity, with between 5 and 8 Mbps and we are soon to be upgraded to Superfast broadband.
    This fabulous farmhouse cottage was converted from the original 17th Century barn, adjoining a former farmhouse, called Beckfoot. The accommodation is extremely spacious; with a large lounge/dining room with a king size bed at one end, a separate fitted kitchen and a shower room. On the first floor there is a very large games room equipped with a full size table tennis table, pool table and air hockey table. Beckfoot enjoys a truly rural location, on the edge of the hamlet of Highbridge and close to the Caldbeck Fells.
    We are in a fabulous rural location but only a few miles from the M6 motorway which makes access to the Lakes and Fells quick and easy.

    Tudor House at 1 North Street, Denton Holme… is delightful Grade II listed property full of period character nestled right by the river in leafy Denton Holme, walking distance from the Cumberland Infirmary, or a 1.2 mile walk, 10 minute bus ride or 5 minute drive from Carlisle City Centre… This listing is for 'The Art Studio': Which comprises a large open plan kitchen/living area, a separate small bedroom with double bed, and a compact bathroom with toilet, basin & shower.
    The building is special, built originally by the Ferguson Brothers as the Temperance Coffee Tavern & Reading Room ~ for their fabric mill and dye works. Ferguson Mill closed in 1991, and the building has since been used for a variety of uses, including a child care centre and a swimming club clubhouse. Tudor House is tall and octagonal with a high pyramid roof and timber framed dormer gables, it neatly turns the angle between Bridge Terrace and North Street. The building retains many attractive period features such as high ceilings, tall windows and original panelling, doors and architraves. The entrance foyer and stairs are also special with original bannisters illuminated by chandelier-style lights and huge gothic arched windows. Upstairs, The Reading Room is lined with book-cases filled with books and art. It is rumored that Charles Dickens came and read aloud to mill workers here, however the building wasn’t completed 1882, 12 years after Charles Dickens’ death… so it does seem unlikely… Tudor House is now a striking development which was recently converted into four quirky, art-and-light filled, fully furnished apartments, all of which are being run as short term lets. There is also a popular bingo hall and a branch of the Cumberland Building Society Today, Denton Holme is a mostly residential area but in the nineteenth century and most of the twentieth century it was Carlisle's main industrial district with many textile mills, engineering works and other factories such as car seat manufacturers and confectioners. Today, very few factories remain although the last mill, Ferguson Brothers, the brothers who built Tudor House at Holme Head, only closed in the 1990s. The majority of the houses and buildings in Denton Holme are red-brick terrace, a few of which - like Tudor House - are listed buildings. Many of the side streets are still cobbled, and although some new housing has been built in recent years and some of the former factories have been converted into flats, the area is still an area recognised and valued for its special historical and aesthetic character.

    A small barn conversion in an idyllic setting in the Northern Fells, Lake District. You will have your own little cottage. Completely self contained with a kitchen/living area. A small bathroom with bath and hand held power shower and loo. Upstairs two bedrooms. One double & one small twin. Spacious enough for 4 adults. Relax and enjoy! We are a 15 minute walk into the village or 2 minutes by car.
    We have just installed a new kitchen downstairs incorporated into the living area which has a dishwasher, washer/dryer, fridge, cooker and hob. Very well equipped for all your cooking needs. A small bathroom with hand basin & loo. Hand held power shower. Upstairs one good sized double bedroom with chest of drawers, desk and chair, bed side tables and lamps. Lined curtains. One small twin bedded room with 2 full sizes single beds, bed side tables with lamps, black out blind and lined curtains. Crisp white Egyptian cotton bed linen on all beds and feather down duvets. Towels are also provided. Built in cupboard/wardrobe with hanging space and some shelving on the landing. The cottage sleeps 4 adults comfortably. Or perfect for a couple with one or two children. Or just a couple or 4 friends. Plenty of storage in a hanging cupboard in hall upstairs and large chest of drawers in double room. ( N.B Bottom 2 drawers have the sheets and towels but one large drawer and two smaller drawers are empty). The bathroom is downstairs. An outside terrace with table and 4 chairs. You will be totally independent or if you wish we can advise on walks and the area. This is great walking country and you can choose to climb the famous fells or just meander around one of the beautiful lakes. My husband is very knowledgeable about the mountains and fells and can advise on walks, cycle rides and climbs. We have our own co-operative pub in the village, The Old Crown which serves it's famous Hesket Newmarket beers brewed in their own brewery behind the pub. They serve dinner (not Mondays!) and great Sunday lunch. Always pre book if you want dinner. We are also close to The Mill Inn in Mungrisedale which serve good food and very child friendly as well as The Boot and Shoe in Greystoke. And one of our new favourites The Horse & Farrier in Threkeld. This part of the world is foodie heaven. Great local produce is widely available and there are wonderful places to dine within a half an hours drive. Our nearest supermarkets are in Penrith, huge choice; Cranstons Food Hall for upmarket produce and fresh meats. Aldi, Morrisons, Booths and Sainsburys. Keswick for independent Co-op. And Booths an upmarket supermarket again selling local produce. The pub is within walking distance. A 15 min walk down the lane into the village. Or over the style and through the fields which takes about 25 minutes. Or a 2 min drive.
    This is a very special part of the world and has recently been designated a World Heritage Site! The views and mountains are second to none. If you have never been then you really must make time to explore the area. We can offer you a cosy and private getaway. Our lovely village with it's own pub and shop/post office and tea rooms is a 20 min walk through the fields or down the lane or 2 mins in the car. We are only 2 miles from Caldbeck, a slightly larger village with a shop, gift shop, hairdressers and church. We are a 25 min drive to Keswick over the beautiful Caldbeck Commons and right onto A66. Where you will find a plethora of outdoor clothing shops as well as tea rooms, a co-op supermarket. Booths supermarket. A small Boots, WH Smiths and the wonderful Cornish Pasty shop. Fishers outdoor shop will hire out walking boots for adults and children. Best boot fitters in the area. We are a 20 min drive to Penrith for all your grocery needs. Cranstons is an upmarket Delhi selling wonderful local produce & great meat, cheese & veg. Also an Aldi, a large Morrison's (cheapest petrol). Booths and a large new Sainsburys & M&S Simply Food in the town Good independent shops, a small cinema, good deli. Also the Lakes Spa Hotel. A fabulous spa where you can book for a massage, facials, swim etc.

    Welcome to Church View. The property is conveniently located to the centre of town and all the amenities Carlisle has to offer.     Church View is an Adult Only apartment, conveniently located to both the bus station and train station, many local restaurants and bars and central shopping area. It is less than 10 minutes walk to the historic quarter featuring the Cathedral and Castle. We are less than 40 minutes drive to the Lake District and 30 minutes to the Roman Wall. Carlisle Lake District Airport is a 15 minute drive.
    Due to the central location there are many eating establishments close by and 5 minutes walk from the late night bars and nightlife on Botchergate. There are excellent budget friendly home cooked lunches served in Oasis Cafe which is based in the church over the road. There are excellent entertainment facilities at The Sands Centre (10 min walk) The Old Fire Station (5 min walk) The Brickyard (10 min walk) and many others.     3 bed house, there's always a chance of other guests being there, but a quiet living space, each door has its own key, so, privacy not disregard, also with public transport stops nearby and shops as well, neighbours are nice, no problems whatsoever with any, bedroom has own tv and coffee/tea facility with kettle/cups Door with own lock n key, 4 cameras in communal areas, stairwell, kitchen, living room n back garden. Front door has a ring bell cameras present for protection of property & guests
    Well, for me what makes it unique is the fact that i don't allow smoking inside and keep a strict policy of clean as you go ( guests responsible for their own space and their dishes, i am responsible for the shared areas ), also, there's a mini gym present

    A cosy king bed suitable for a travellers, on the top floor of our house, cot and large sofa bed is available. The bedroom also can be a two single beds use. The bus stop is 1 min walk away from the house and you can get to town within 20 min on the 76 bus. (Cash only, for buses)As well as you can find train station and bus station at the town and is only 30 min walk from the house, taxi is only 8min. The area is nice and the nebourhood is quiet.
    Our cosy, king size bed is located on second floor. It is peaceful and quiet at late evening in the area and house. The bathroom is shared with the host. Guests are more than welcome to use the kitchen and fridge at any time. Our house is situated in the quiet area and does have many bars or restaurants around it but in the walking distance from Toby Carvery Carlisle which is only 14min walk away. However there is variety of food deliveries available in Carlisle as well as restaurants near the town. We are also located within a short walk from a nice Melbourne park with a river. We are a short bus journey to Town of Carlisle where you can find many atractions. As well as train station, bus station, shops, restaurants and cafes.
    We are situated near enough to comfortably walk into town within short distance and are surrounded by trees, parks and peace.

    The "Great Border City" centre is only a short walk away, as are the Tourist Attractions, Green Spaces, Supermarkets and Entertainment. Carlisle existed long before the Romans arrived in Britain and sits on The Roman Wall, a "World Heritage Site". We have been fought over by Scots, Romans, Vikings, Normans and Scots again. We have a proud Religious, Industrial and Military history, all of which can be experienced within a short walk of each other at Carlisle Cathedral, Tullie House (museum) and Carlisle Castle. There has been religious activity at the site of our 900yr old Cathedral for well over 1000yrs. As Carlisle Castle approaches its 1000th birthday, it still holds the title of the most besieged Castle in Britain and once held Mary Queen of Scots as prisoner. Be sure to locate "The Licking Stones" in the dungeon when you visit. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan you could visit Kingmore Nature Reserve North, for a walk and see the area where the "Greymore Ring" was discovered in 1817. The ring now resides in the British Museum and is believed to be the inspiration for JRR Tolkien's ring. Kingmore Nature Reserve follows the course of one of the country's great railway lines, which for over 100yrs carried passengers between Carlisle and Edinburgh. The Waverly Line was so called because it ran through the romantic and beautiful countryside immortalised by Sir Walter Scott in his "Waverly" novels. We are home to the world famous Carr's Water Biscuits and make millions of Ginger Snaps and Custard Creams every year. While you are wandering around the city centre try and locate the clock tower. It only has 3 faces; East, West and South. Legend has it that there's no North face because the man who donated it to the city would not give the Scots "The time of day". All this sight seeing can be tiring so why not seek refreshment in one of the the pubs that was nationalised by the Government for 57yrs between 1916 and 1973 under the "State Management Scheme". They were nationalised during WW1 to aid the war effort by combating drunkenness among the munition workers. Located close to the University of Cumbria, we have been used by: - Families looking at the University. - Couples/families on "City Breaks". - Those who are just passing through on their way North or South. - As a base to explore The Lake District (World Heritage Site) or the Scottish Borders to the North. - As a resting point for those walking Hadrian's Wall (World Heritage Site). - Contractors on short and not so short contracts. - Cyclists passing through on various routs.

    Tudor House is a delightful Grade II listed property full of period character nestled right by the river in leafy Denton Holme, walking distance from the Cumberland Infirmary, or Carlisle City Centre… The apartment comprises a large living space with open plan kitchen/living area, bathroom with bath and shower, and a second large living area / bedroom with a kingsized bed, and the option of two additional folding single beds.
    The building is special, built originally by the Ferguson Brothers as the Temperance Coffee Tavern & Reading Room ~ for their fabric mill and dye works. Ferguson Mill closed in 1991, and the building has since been used for a variety of uses, including a child care centre and a swimming club clubhouse. Tudor House is tall and octagonal with a high pyramid roof and timber framed dormer gables, it neatly turns the angle between Bridge Terrace and North Street. The building retains many attractive period features such as high ceilings, tall windows and original panelling, doors and architraves. The entrance foyer and stairs are also special with original bannisters illuminated by chandelier-style lights and huge gothic arched windows. Upstairs, The Reading Room is lined with book-cases filled with books and art. It is rumored that Charles Dickens came and read aloud to mill workers here, however the building wasn’t completed 1882, 12 years after Charles Dickens’ death… so it does seem unlikely… Tudor House is now a striking development which was recently converted into four quirky, art-and-light filled, fully furnished apartments, all of which are being run as short term lets. On the ground floor, there are two apartments, both one bedroom; and on first floor a further two apartments, one with one bedroom and one with two bedrooms. The spaces vary in size, some are very spacious, and we can also provide sofa beds and/or folding beds to add more flexibility to your stay. These apartments are warm, and filled with books, art and curios… these are comfortable, characterful nests, away from the noise and hustle bustle; yet conveniently close to the city centre.     Carlisle is famous for its origins as a Roman settlement, and is just a stone’s throw of the mighty Hadrian’s Wall. Carlisle itself is a city packed with history and heritage, known to many as the ‘Great Border City’, Carlisle is now the predominant cultural, industrial and commercial centre for North Cumbria. There are excellent walks along the River Caldew with Dalston in one direction and the city in the other without having to cross a major road. Denton Holme is fairly self sufficient and has a good range of shops, including ice-cream and fish and chip shops, Indian and Chinese takeaways, a quaint traditional sweet shop, a primary school, a community centre, a pharmacy, a co-op supermarket, a hardware store, a newsagents, several gift-shops and a florist, coffee shops and a choice of barbers & hairdressers. There is also a popular bingo hall and a branch of the Cumberland Building Society Today, Denton Holme is a mostly residential area but in the nineteenth century and most of the twentieth century it was Carlisle's main industrial district with many textile mills, engineering works and other factories such as car seat manufacturers and confectioners. Today, very few factories remain although the last mill, Ferguson Brothers, the brothers who built Tudor House at Holme Head, only closed in the 1990s. The majority of the houses and buildings in Denton Holme are red-brick terrace, a few of which - like Tudor House - are listed buildings. Many of the side streets are still cobbled, and although some new housing has been built in recent years and some of the former factories have been converted into flats, the area is still an area recognised and valued for its special historical and aesthetic character.

We're on the Ullswater Way walking route and Pooley Bridge is close by. Enjoy a pint brewed at the Brackenrigg Inn. Fine dine or wild swim at Another Place.
    This superbly-situated flat has already enjoyed some big changes – the start of a transformation to make it the perfect place to enjoy Ullswater. There is an open plan kitchen/dining area/lounge with new John Lewis oven, hob and dishwasher, new pans by Green Pan and a striking teal sofa by Gallery Hudson. In the bedroom we have a new Ercol Teramo double bed, and you can enjoy luxurious linen from Tielle Love Luxury – we discovered it at the fabulous Pig hotels chain. There's a new Sony Bravia TV with around 80 channels and radio stations available and if you have a Netflix account you can connect up. And you can listen to your own music using our Minirig speaker. The bathroom has underfloor heating, a bath and a shower. There is a lobby so you don't need to bring muddy boots or wet gear in to the flat. And a private parking bay is included. The flat has an impressive sandstone portico and a huge bay window where the views of Ullswater and the fells – including Helvellyn – are unforgettable.
    Wreay Mansions is a cluster of apartments converted from a historic 19th century hunting lodge with elevated views of Ullswater – Wainwright's "loveliest of lakes" and the inspiration for Wordsworth's poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. The new Ullswater Way walking route is at the end of the drive. Just down the hill is the Brackenrigg Inn with more great views, food including Sunday lunch, its own microbrewery and – in winter – a big, roaring fire. Bustling Pooley Bridge – with its pubs, shops and tea rooms by the river – is less than two miles away. There is a new temporary footbridge and free car park to use until the new stainless steel crossing opens this spring to replace the 300-year-old one swept away by floods in 2015. From the flat you can easily reach attractions like Aira Force waterfall, owned by the National Trust, and the Ullswater Steamers. You can ride, cycle, fish, sail, paddleboard or even wild swim nearby at Another Place hotel, which has fine dining and great bar food. The Garden Flat is great base from which to explore the rest of the Lake District including Keswick, Windermere, Buttermere and Grasmere – all around a scenic 40 minute drive away. Other great places to eat include 1863 Bistro in Pooley Bridge or the famous Sharrow Bay hotel on the opposite shore. Before arriving you could also stock up at the renowned Tebay Services near Shap on the M6, a family-owned site with its own farm and butcher. The company also owns the petrol station and store at Rheged arts centre you'll pass as you head from Penrith to Watermillock. Fuel is competitive and there's great local food and drink on sale.
