Bebelplatz: Site of first Nazi book burning in 1933 Ironically, the square is better remembered today as the venue for the Nazi's first official book burning bonfire on May 10, 1933 just opposite Humboldt University, where Karl Marx had been a student of Hegel's. The action, meant as a dire warning to Nazi opponents was instigated with the purposes of destroying the "Jewish mind and the whole rotten liberalist tendency". Over 20,000 works including those of the so-called subversive writers including Karl Marx, Berthold Brecht and Thomas Mann were set alight and destroyed.

The Bauhaus building known as Bauhaus Archive, located in Berlin's Tiergarten, functions today as a documentation centre with exhibition spaces. Designed by Walter Gropius in 1964, it was built by Gropius' long-time associate Alex Cvijanovic (1971 to 1978) who modified it in accordance with the Berlin site, including its present front ramp recognizable because of its particular roof, reminiscent of an ocean liner's smokestacks. The original, architecturally revolutionary, Bauhaus building was designed by Walter Gropius and built in Dessau in 1925.

"Alex" to Berliners, a cattle market in the Middle Ages, a military parade square and an exercise ground for nearby barracks until the mid 19th century - Alexanderplatz is the square named to honour Alexander I, Tsar of Russia, on his visit to Berlin in 1805. It was here that Alfred Döblin took the pulse of the cosmopolitan metropolis portrayed in his 1929 novel "Berlin Alexanderplatz" filmed by Fassbinder for a TV series as a portrait of the bustling city in the 1920s before the imminent Nazi takeover. Fast forward to more recent times, one million people congregated here, on 4 November 1989 to demonstrate against the GDR regime shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin's most important monuments – a landmark and symbol all in one with over two hundred years of history. A former symbol of the divided city, it drew visitors who used to climb an observation platform in order to get a glimpse of the world behind the Iron Curtain, on the other side of the barren "death-strip" which separated East from West Berlin, geographically and politically. It was here that on June 12, 1987, Ronald Regan issued his stern command to his cold war adversary admonishing him with the words: "Mr. Gorbachov – tear down this wall!". Crown Prince's Palace (Kronprinzenpalais) next to the Staatsoper, located along Unter den Linden boulevard overlooking Bebelplatz and the adjacent Princesses' Palace (Prinzessinnenpalais) are impressive town palaces, the former residences of Hohenzollern royal family members. The Prince's Palace was converted from a townhouse by Philip Gerlach in 1732, to become a town palace for Crown Prince Friedrich, the future Friedrich the Great (1740-1786). It remained a royal residence until 1918 when the Hohenzollern dynasty came to an end. The Crown Princesses' Palace – today's Opera Café immediately to the right of the Staatsoper had been built for the daughters of Friedrich Wilhelm III (1797-1840) in 1811 with an extension, the attractive covered bridge, connecting it to the Princes' Palace. Berlin's oldest university, completed in 1766, is located in a former royal palace. The Gedächtniskirche or Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is the symbolic centre of West Berlin, an anti-war memorial to peace and reconciliation. Following allied bombing during WWII, the original west Tower has remained standing as a ruin and is hauntingly named the "hollow tooth" as it is literally an empty husk. Immediately recognizable and located on the Breitscheidplatz at the start of the busy shopping district which includes Tauentzienstraße and Ku'damm, this is the only building on the square which was spared by the bombing and deliberately preserved as a part ruin.

In addition to leisure facilities such as cinemas, bowling alleys, event arenas, restaurants and shops, the new Mercedes-Platz near river Spree boasts offices and hotels. Green outdoor areas and fountains contrast nicely with the surrounding buildings and invite visitors to relax in the open air. Thanks to its central location in Friedrichshain, a visit to Mercedes-Platz is easily done. The square can be reached by bus, train and even by boat. Even though promenaders and shopping enthusiasts have lots to see and do already near East Side Gallery, Mercedes-Platz is not yet complete. By 2021, a 140 metre high office tower will be built - the East Side Tower.

Berlin's Holocaust Memorial, located in Mitte on a stretch of the former "death strip" where the Wall once stood near Brandenburg Gate, is Berlin's stunning monument to the Holocaust, dedicated to the Jewish victims of the Nazi genocide of World War II. Impressive in its awesome grey soberness, rather than sombreness, it includes an underground Ort der Information (Information Centre) located on the south-eastern side of the memorial grounds, accessible via two flights of stairs or a lift.

Built between 1861 and 1869 according to plans by Hermann Waesemann, the first sitting of the magistrate in the new town hall was held as early as four years after the foundation stone was laid. The neo-renaissance building was designed as a multi-winged complex in round-arch style featuring three inner courtyards and a 74 meters high tower.

The Frankfurter Tor ("Frankfurt Gate") is a large square in the inner-city Friedrichshain locality of Berlin. It is situated in the center of the district, at the intersection of Karl-Marx-Allee and Frankfurter Allee (the eastbound federal highways No. 1 and No. 5) with the Warschauer Straße and Petersburger Straße ring road (federal highway No. 96a). The Frankfurter Tor station, on the city's U-Bahn line U 5, is located under the square. The previously unnamed square received the name “Frankfurter Tor” on 8 November 1957 in the course of its reconstruction after World War II. The designation recalls both the historic city gate of the Berlin Customs Wall, providing access to the road to the city of Frankfurt (Oder), as well as two former street names, Große Frankfurter Straße and Frankfurter Allee, for the Wilhelmine east–west axis of the major intersection at this location. The original location of the gate, however, was approximately 850 metres (2,790 ft) west of today’s Frankfurter Tor intersection, near Weberwiese station. The densely built-up area was largely destroyed by the bombing of Berlin in World War II and the Battle of Berlin in 1945.
