Neighborhoods

Plenty of coffee shops, restaurants of all cuisines and price ranges, and eclectic, independent shops. Easy to pop out for a bite- many have outdoor seating when the weather is nice, or bring back take-out. Weekends there's a couple of farmers markets (some emphasizing local produce, others local crafts and food trucks), at night a variety of clubs. Theatres within walking distance. Gym and yoga studios within a couple block radius. Easy walk to the center of the downtown area. Bus stops just at the end of the block for heading north, another block over for heading south. Uber/Lyft picks up within minutes. Italian Market starts just a few blocks away. The produce stands lining 9th street, while cheap, aren't the top quality (better stuff at the farmers markets), but the shops are fun. Fante's if you're a cook, worth wandering around in. Make sure you go all the way to the back up the ramp for all the baking stuff. Di Brunos and others for cheeses, antipasto, and other goodies. If you go all the way down past Washington Ave. to E. Passyunk, you'll see Genos and Pats, the two dueling cheesesteak places. I actually like Jim's South Street, which is conveniently a lot closer. From Google: The tree-lined residential area of Bella Vista is best known for the open-air Italian Market along 9th Street. Foodies flock to the neighborhood's bustling groceries, bakeries and restaurants to sample diverse cuisines that range from Italian to Asian to Mexican. Nearby are the rival, self-proclaimed cheesesteak inventors, Geno's and Pat's King of Steaks. Bardascino Park features bocce ball courts.

Historic, colonial area including Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and many other historic buildings and museums. A great area to spend the day, whether exploring American history, architecture, or eating and shopping. Stop in the victors center by Independence Hall to see all the options for the area. From Google:The birthplace of American independence, this now modern neighborhood is best known for its major Colonial-era sites. Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the Betsy Ross House are top area attractions. Many of Old City's residents live in restored 18th-century rowhouses that line some of the country's oldest streets. Nightlife options for fashionable crowds include trendy eateries and bars along South 2nd Street.

The shops along Walnut heading towards Rittenhouse Square is like going down 5th Ave. in New York City; these will be more of the higher end, name brand stores along with more of the fancier restaurants. Chestnut will have more of the mass market/big box type retail stores. When ready for a break, stroll through the park; during the spring and fall, there's a good chance there may be an arts festival going on there as well. From Google: Posh Rittenhouse Square is anchored by its namesake park, and the surrounding streets are filled with elegant apartment buildings and hotels, high-profile restaurants and chic bars. Fashionable crowds head to the stylish boutiques, art galleries and spas along Walnut Street, in the Rittenhouse Row district. The Rosenbach Museum & Library houses Lewis Carroll's personal copy of "Alice in Wonderland."

The downtown area of Philly, make sure to visit City Hall, right in the center. Afterwards, end up on the west side at Dillworth Park, and then across the street is Love Park where the LOVE sculpture has a line of visitors taking their pictures. If you're feeling energetic, then head up the diagonal of Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Museum Mile, with the Philadelphia Museum and the Rocky steps at the end.

Food scene

Great places to eat.
A great place for locals and visitors, especially if the weather is bad out. An overwhelming selection of food stands and restaurants, mixed in with shops along with produce and butchers, fishmongers, and other sources for a great home cooked meal. On Saturdays the Amish bring their goods as well. Prepare to spend a few hours here, and come hungry! On top of that Chinatown is across the street, if you're in the mood for asian food. Not just Chinese, but Japanese, Korean, and Burmese as well. https://www.visitphilly.com/articles/philadelphia/best-things-to-eat-at-reading-terminal-market/?utm_source=VisitPhillyEmail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=VPE_December2019&utm_content=ReadingTerminalMarket Article 10 Awesome Things to Eat at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia Great eats at one of the best public markets in the U.S... Photo by R. Kennedy for Visit Philadelphia Reading Terminal Market is a must-visit on any trip to Philadelphia. Beloved by locals and visitors alike, this historic indoor market features more than 80 vendors offering an astonishing variety of food, with some vendors operating in much the same way that they did when the market opened in 1892. The globally inspired food — available for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert as well as for snacking — is the main draw, while butchers, bakers, chocolatiers, cheesemongers and produce vendors offer food, ingredients and goods for sale. From scrapple and samosas to soul food and smoothies, Reading Terminal Market is such a fantastic place to eat that it can be tough to choose what to get. So here are 10 of our favorite things to eat at Reading Terminal Market, the nation’s oldest continuously operating farmers’ market. Santos for Visit Philadelphia While there are delicious cheesesteaks at Reading Terminal Market, the best bet for sandwich lovers is DiNic’s famous roast pork, voted “Best Sandwich in America” by the Travel Channel. The fourth-generation shop builds its sandwich with thinly sliced, juicy roast pork, lining the long roll with sliced sharp provolone and topping it with bright green chopped broccoli rabe. If you like spice, opt for grilled longhots — long green chili peppers — as well. The spot’s popularity can mean long lines, but it’s worth the wait. Santos for Visit Philadelphia Dutch Eating Place, a charming diner run by Amish and Mennonite families, is best known for its apple dumplings, made by peeling and coring whole apples, coating them in a sugar-cinnamon mixture and wrapping them in pastry. As the dumplings bake, the fruit slumps into custardy-goodness in the pastry shell. Traditionally served warm with cream poured over, the dumplings make a fantastic dessert to go — especially if you also pick up some ice cream from Bassets. Santos for Visit Philadelphia Unlike a traditional Philadelphia soft pretzel, the Amish-made pretzels at Miller’s Twist are hand-rolled from fresh dough, brushed with butter and served slightly warm. Even better? In the mornings, Miller’s makes a breakfast pretzel stuffed with scrambled eggs, cheese and your choice of bacon, sausage or ham. Santos for Visit Philadelphia There are plenty of whoopie pies at the market’s bakeries, but nobody makes this regional treat quite like whimsical bakery Flying Monkey. The traditional whoopie is two circles of cake — typically chocolate — filled with fluffy white frosting, but Flying Monkey offers a variety of tasty creative pies like cookies ‘n cream, lemon lavender, strawberries & cream, FlufferNutter, coconut and chai. The family-owned Dienner’s has been using the same ingredients for three generations and, more importantly, maintains high standards of freshness; poultry arrives every morning from Philadelphia-area farms. Hungry patrons can order whole or half rotisseries, or a pulled chicken sandwich with signature sides. The wings, available in three varieties, are the most portable option for visitors on the go. A hidden gem, though, is the family’s lemonada, made with fresh lemon juice and mint blended together with a hint of rosewater. The resulting sweet-tart drink is bright green and supremely refreshing, and makes the perfect accompaniment to a plate of shawarma — or pretty much any other meal at the market. Only a few blocks away, this is one of the iconic Philly cheesesteak places. Try not to go during prime mealtime, as there's easily a line that goes around the corner and down the block. Also, they only take cash (there's an ATM inside). Eating is upstairs, and can be loud and crowded; I usually just bring mine back home to eat. If you're not into cheesesteak and/or want to try something different, they also make a great hoagie- and you get to skip the cheesesteak line (go past the line and cut in right before the cash register). These hoagies are huge, one will last me 4 or 5 meals!

This is where we go when we want Peking duck. The congee (rice porridge) is also really good; my dad and I like the version with fish fillets in it, my brother prefers the plain. A basic dim sum selection that satisfies the kids, and you'll leave stuffed. If a whole or even half a Peking duck is too much, you can get just a bite sized version- the Peking duck with the sauce and scallions rolled into a little bau (chinese steamed bread).

When you want a big breakfast but are in a hurry, get a breakfast sandwich here. It'll last you the whole day (I can only eat half, and the other half becomes dinner). If you like old/antique stuff, they've got a great selection. I have to try and avoid the place, as I/m trying to pare down, and every time I go in there I want to buy something. Make sure you go all the way to the back room, where they have architectural salvage stuff in case you need a stained glass window. The large display case to your right as you come in has enough cool stuff for its own shop.

The story behind this collection, and how it came to Philadelphia, is a soap opera in it's own right. The collection is fascinating not just for what's in it, but how it's grouped and displayed. Tiny little plates on the frames identify the artist; other than that, you're left to your own interpretations- no lecture-y/educational explanations posted.

Tiny little plates on the frames identify the artist; other than that, you're left to your own interpretations- no lecture-y/educational explanations posted.

I always pass through here on the way to visit my parents or just getting to the other side of town. It's a great building, full of architectural details. Dilworth Park, on the west side, has an ice skating rink in the winter and a run through water fountain in the summer. Love Park, across the street at the end of Ben Franklin Parkway, has the LOVE sculpture and a great view up the parkway to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (with the Rocky steps). A great place to hang out and take a break.

This is a fun shop for decorative/home items, sourced from other countries. So not only do you get something neat, it benefits a good cause.

You'll find me here Sundays at 10am, getting local produce for the week's meals. Summertime peaches and weird heirloom tomatoes that are 100 times tastier than the supermarket. Fall apples in 20 varieties that I've never heard of. Baked goods (I get my bread and holiday pies here), cheeses, and other stuff. Yum!

I love independent hardware stores. I just take a picture of what's broken, and Mitchell knows exactly what I need to fix it. Another fun place to check out useful knickyknackys that you didn't know you needed. AnnaMarie picks out wonderful decorative stuff, got a bunch of different ribbons for holiday decorations.

Grocery store just past Whole Foods. And they carry Hagen Daz ice cream, which Whole Foods does not. Also have a decent produce section. If you like beer, they have a bunch of local brewery stuff, and you can buy single cans.

A great place to hang out and take a break. During December they have pop-up shops (Christmas Village in Love Park and Made in Philadelphia in Dilworth Park), with food and a bar, light show, ferris wheel, and a little train ride. Carousel in the center of City Hall, and musicians and performers. Go across the street on the east side to Macys and catch the light show and Dicken's Village of A Christmas Carol there.

Street parking

Street parking is limited and highly restricted. Read all posted parking signs carefully as parking restrictions and allowances, such as to the time allowed and day of the week, vary block by block. The parking police are very diligent here in Philadelphia. There are public parking lots: at 5th and Bainbridge, and another at Rodman between 10th and 11th, behind ACME Markets on South St.

Walking is the fastest way to get around

I just walk everywhere, unless the weather is miserable. There's always so much to see. The bus lines are just a block or two away for heading north or south (I'm not real familiar as I just walk instead). Uber/Lyft will show up in a couple of minutes, and would be around $10 to get to another part of the Center City area.
