ZONE OLTRARNO AND PIAZZA SANTO SPIRITO: “DILADDARNO” or “OLTRARNO” (“on the other side of the Arno”) as Florentines say, is the whole area of Florence located on the left bank of the Arno River. This area of the city, an integral part of the historic center (in fact it includes the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens), includes the famous districts of San Frediano, Santo Spirito, Borgo San Jacopo and Porta Romana. Also in this part of the city there are many monuments and examples of religious architecture: the Basilica of Santo Spirito, the Brancacci Chapel, the church of San Felice in Piazza, the church of San Frediano in Cestello, the church of San Jacopo Soprarno, the church of Santa Maria del Carmine and many more. You will also find examples of military architecture in the only sections of Renaissance city walls still intact and in the fortified gates: Porta Romana, Porta San Frediano, Porta San Giorgio, Porta San Miniato, Porta San Niccolò. THE BASILICA OF SANTO SPIRITO: in the homonymous square, it is one of the most suggestive points of Florence; it was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and has always been, since its establishment, ruled by the monks of Sant’Agostino order. Inside there are works of the most famous Florentine artists like the wooden crucifix of the young Michelangelo. The square is often the location of numerous events or fairs, first of all the famous antique and crafts market that takes place (usually) every second Sunday of the month, excluding the months of July and August.
