From 1806 to 1813, Napoleon ruled the city of Split, along with many of its Dalmatian neighbour-cities. Walls were torn down, new roads were built and electricity powered the city for the first time. To return the favour, Split has immortalized Marmont in the name of this popular pedestrian street, full of posh shops and cafés.

Although the conqueror, Napoleon's Marshal Marmont is responsible for the urbanization of Dalmatian cities, so Splićani in turn retained him in the most beautiful Split street. Marmont's street is not only beautiful but also historically relevant. It was founded in 1922 by a library and a franchise reader, today Alliance Francaise. There is also the first Karaman Cinema in Split. There is also a unique fish market to which no flies fly due to the smell of sulfur from nearby spas. There are also beautiful secession buildings of Duplancic and Toncic, while the northern part of it through the Venetian bastion dates back to the architecture of the theater and the church of Our Lady of Health.
