Culinary delights at the most striking location of the Haarlemmermeer. History Fort The fort at Vijfhuizen is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, a 19th-century line of defense around the capital. The Defense Line consists of a ring of forts, batteries, numerous dikes, locks and inundation polders. With the threat of a hostile army, dikes would be broken and a gigantic ring of water emerged. The Defense Line is a high point of defensive and hydraulic engineering technology and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996 and must be preserved for future generations, as are Versailles and the Pyramids of Giza. The fort at Vijfhuizen had been vacant for years and slowly fell victim to vandalism and the elements. Seized by its charm and history, a plan was developed for a second life.
