Beautiful lake surrounded by mountains on the way to Rethymnon, 40 minutes by car. You are able to swim, ride a seabike, and eat in one of the wlocal restaurands "paidakia" or "antikristo" two ways to enjoy local lamp.

Lake Kournas is a lake on the island of Crete, Greece, near the village of Kournas. It is in the Apokoronas municipality of Chania regional unit close to the border with Rethymno regional unit, 47 km from the town of Chania. Kournas is a fairly large village perched on a hill overlooking the lake. Crete's only freshwater lake, Lake Kournas, is relatively large, with a perimeter of 3.5 km. There is a nature preserve on the Southwest side of the lake. There is a rustic road from the North of the lake to the Hills on the West of the lake. The lake used to be called Koresia after ancient Korion, a city thought to be in the area with a temple to Athena. Tavernas and pedalo rental shops line part of the shore.

Lake Kournas lies 28km from Chania and is Crete’s only freshwater lake. It’s definitely worth a visit. There are a number of tavernas and cafes on the lake side and pedaloes and canoes for hire so you can try and spot some of the unusual wildlife out on the lake such as Terrapins. The views are stunning and the colour of the lake can vary during the day. During the summer its possible to walk the whole perimeter of the lake. From Georgioupolis its an easy drive, or you can catch the tourist train or go on foot following the designated path through one of the local hamlets.
