A little known site of the 1303 battle between an English raiding army of 30,000 lead by Sir John Segrave and an army of 10,000 Scots lead by John III Comyn (then Guardian of Scotland but more famous for being killed at the alter in Dumfries by Robert the Bruce) in 1306. No doubt the numbers will have been exaggerated when memories of the battle were put in writing but local landmarks still hark back to the battle (The Kill Burn - flows into the Bilston Burn, Hewan Bank forms part of the slopes down to the River North Esk and Shinbanes Field where many human bones have been unearthed over the centuries).
