Fantastic beach, great for surfing, body boarding, paddle boarding, walking or just sunbathing with great views! Lifeguard presence from 10am to 6pm. Gastro bus on site for drinks & food. Parking is expensive (£10 in the summer!) but there is free parking on the lane from Bantham to Buckland (10 min walk, driver can always drop people & beach equipment in Bantham village first), or if you fancy a longer walk across farmland and along the river there is also free parking in Aveton Gifford (approx 1h).

(6 miles) reputed to be one of the best surfing beaches on the South Devon coast - there are lessons available from the Bantham Surfing Academy. Other water sports available including paddle boarding, and a day pottering up the Avon River when the tide is right, is a day well spent. SUP Away will deliver boards to holiday homes. Walking along the coast path towards Thurlestone around the corner, and South Milton Sands beyond that is an option, and there is the Gastrobus which is open seasonally in the car park, offering everything from freshly made baps to coffees, teas and cakes, or for a larger meal head the short walking distance to The Sloop Inn.

Our main surf beach. It has loos, a car park, a Discovery surf school (lessons, board and wetsuit hire - book online) and a gastro bus in the summer. Dogs are banned on the main beach in the summer but are allowed on the dog beach next to the estuary. In the summer it is heaving. If you can't take crowds leave this for the winter months. Also in the summer months consider your arrival and departure times. A single track lane with passing places leads to the beach - if your arrival hits the around 4pm departure from the beach, it will take you hours to get down the lane. So it is a beach where it is worth considering your logistics before you go. And it goes without really needing to be said - if you don't like reversing or putting your car in the hedge (it's a hire car) this is totally not the beach for you. There is no other option - it is a very narrow lane. Despair not, the other side of the estuary is Bigbury beach which has a mostly two lane lane approach. Bigbury beach also has surf school, loos and a car park. But it also has Burgh Island (with the posh hotel), the sea tractor (to get to the island), a pub (on the island) and a Venus Cafe (good veggie food). So it is probably an extra few minutes away but also worth it. It is also heaving in the summer. Both beaches are lifeguarded in the summer and during the holidays. Both have rip currents (usually left hand of the beach at Bantham) and so it is wise to swim at lifeguarded times between the flags. Also at both beaches there are weaver fish in the hotter months - they live just under the sand and have a sharp sting. The lifeguards will produce buckets of hot water for you to bathe your foot if stung. I don’t know why but it eases the pain.

A bit of a drive to get here but a fabulous day out if the weather is good. Sand dunes and a beautiful, huge expanse of beach. Theres a coffee van in the car park selling teas, coffees, cold drinks and light lunches like sandwiches . You can hire surf boards and have lessons here too.

Gorgeous beach looking out to Burgh Island. We love the walk to South Milton from here via Thurlstone on the South West Coast Path. Great street food & drinks from mobile vintage vehicles in the car park. If you are walking to South Milton, excellent food options with The Beach House & Rock Box
