The Baviaanskloof (Valley of Baboons) is nestled between the Baviaanskloof mountain range in the north and the Kouga mountain range in the south. This 192000Ha conservation area, a World Heritage Site, is home to an amazing diversity of habitat types and species. From forest yellowoods to karoo bossies, thicket spekboom to fynbos proteas, the Kloof is nature lover's paradise! Numerous campsites and lodges, hiking and 4x4 trails are a must see and keep a look out for the San Art which adorns the pristine cliffs. The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve Project, an exciting Eastern Cape Government and Wilderness Foundation initiative, is attempting to align and facilitate the conservation of the region's bio-diversity and natural resources, with the agricultural and rural development needs. Things to do in Baviaanskloof: - Cycling - Camping - Hiking - Nature Drives

An easy day outing is to travel some way into the Baviaanskloof Mountain region from the town of Patensie. Beautiful rock formations, lovely mountain views and the odd wild buck, are all on the list.

You need a 4x4 or a "bakkie" to do this trip. It is a long and slow drive but, wow! The scenery is out of this world, not something you get to see every day. The road is a dirt road with a couple of mountain passes. There is a visitor's fee payable wt the entrance gate.
