Visiting Mau forest means walking with your eyes, hearts and taste buds ready to see the ritual of honey hunting, love the serene environment and more importantly enjoy an unexplainable flavour, the one of smoked honey chewed directly from the honeycomb in the middle of the humid and cold forest. I can’t tell it better than the students from the University of Gastronomic sciences who toured this presidium project who had this to say “...But that flavour, just like all the study trip’s feelings and memories of what we touch and taste, can only remain etched in our minds”. A good number of international and domestic tourists have accessed this area and none of them regretted to have visited this God-given treasure kind of a place. The guests leave Nakuru town early in the morning, visit Kiptunga forest, learn about traditional hives, traditional way of honey harvesting, tasting and refining. This is followed by a tour of historical Mau Mau caves (that were used by the Kenyan freedom fighters) and waterfalls. The visitors are also introduced to different medicinal herbs found in Mau forest that are used by the Ogiek community. The day ends with a visit to Ogiek’s traditional homestead to understand the community’s traditional way of living. Traditional dishes will be prepared at Ogiek Community Guest House by Mary Ondolo who is a member of the Slow Food Chefs’ Alliance in Kenya.

I am a gastronome, working with Slow Food Kenya. I love travelling and tour guiding aiming at providing tourists with a unique experience by giving them an opportunity of enjoying the Kenyan rich wildlife, natural and cultural diversity. I give an opportunity of enjoying a new model of tourism, made of meeting and exchanges with farmers, beekeepers, pastoralists and other players in the food sector. I offer something more classic and simple tourism "Safari", recognizing the critical role that local communities play in ensuring sustainable tourism and how food plays a central role in understanding and discovering local cultures. I give the communities an opportunity to participating in tourism planning and development so that they can reap from their natural resources, take part in environmental conservation and protection.
