There is a reason County Meath is called 'The Royal county' and that's because it was the seat of the High Kings of Ireland. The Hill of Tara is where a King was decided upon and Crowned and this standing stone is the exact place it was done so long ago. Not only is it worth a visit for the wonderful history but it's a wonderful place to walk with some fabulous views

Apart from the beauty of this building it also holds a fascinating history old and more recent. Slane distillery is not to be missed. You can get a tour around with some great guides to give you a bit of the local history (ask for Gary tell him Áine sent you!) 😉 The Hill of Slane nearby also has a lot of history attached including the story of Saint Patrick. Slane village itself is gorgeous with lots of places to eat

Probably my favourite place in the world apart from home! Loughcrew Megalithic Cairns (or more properly known as Sliabh na Cailleach/the Hag's chair )is over 5,000 years old as old if not pre-dating Newgrange. A magical place with a nice short walk up to the most spectacular views spanning 4 different counties. There is a lovely little thatched café & giftshop at the bottom

Places to eat/take away options

Park Rí in Kells is a food hall with loads of options.. Supermacs, Papa John's, noodle bar, Cavery, speciality coffee, newsagents and Aldi is just across the road so very handy to pick up any extra bits you need especially as it's only 15 mins from the cottage! Kells town has lots of fantastic eating spots.. 'Jacks bar' has not only rave reviews for food and drinks but also atmosphere as they have live music most evenings (including some trad sessions!) The Vanilla pod/The Headfort Arms/The Bective are 3 other great options all with a few mins walk of each other! Mullagh is less than 10 mins from here and has a lovely hotel 'Killians' that does hot food and sometimes live music. Kingscourt has the well known Cabra Castle if you'd like something special for afternoon tea or dinner, it also has lots of take away options in the town. There are loads of other options in nearby Navan etc so don't hesitate to ask..
Most famous for being the town where The book of Kells was discovered but has alot more to offer. Many historic sights and nice places to visit. Also great place to eat with an award winning Hotel 'The Headfort Arms' and nice little cafe's and shops

Loads of nice place to either eat in or get take away. The Wishing well on the main street is one of our favourites and there's an Apache pizza and Peking Asian cuisine on the opposite side of the street!
