Know the chain requirements before traveling
Chain Requirement Levels
During the winter months, motorists may encounter traction chain controls in the mountain areas within California. When chain controls are established, signs will be posted along the road indicating the type of requirement. There are Three Levels of Chain Requirements in California:
Requirement 1 (R-1): All vehicles must carry chains (Nov-Apr)
Requirement 2 (R-2): All 2wd cars must have chains on drive wheels. 4wd cars must carry chains and have snow tires.
Requirement 3 (R-3): All vehicles must have chains on drive wheels. No Exceptions.
