The Brickhouse Run

409 Cockade Alley Petersburg, VA 23803 The Brickhouse Run is a friendly and welcoming pub and restaurant in historic Old Towne, Petersburg. They offer a regularly changing menu of homemade British and American specialties, an excellent wine list, six beers on tap, including local cask conditioned ale on hand pump, and a full range of spirits. The Brickhouse Run borrows heavily from the 1000-year-old tradition of the British Public House. It is not meant to feel like a pub which has been plucked from a town in the British countryside and dropped in Petersburg. Rather, they like to think that if Petersburg were part of Britain, this is what its pub would be like. The Brickhouse Run is designed for drinking, conversation and eating. There is no television (except on special occasions, like election night, the final game of the World Series or a coronation). The bar, designed and built by Mark Pehanich, is set up to encourage conversation. Since most people stand and drink in British pubs, there are only a few bar stools. The brass rail and small overhang encourage people to face each other while sitting or leaning by the bar rather then sitting facing the bartender. The brass hooks under the edge of the bar top are for hanging purses or jackets. The bar is made of mahogany to the average dimensions of several pub bars in England. The molding around the bar panels is unique to Petersburg and was reproduced from an old door built here.

Pamplin Historical Park

The fortifications were constructed by the troops led by General Robert E. Lee, and the property is the site of where Petersburg was seized by the Union troops. Today, Pamplin Historical Park is a 424-acre campus where visitors can feel transported back to the antebellum south by exploring Civil War era homes and National landmarks and museums. Featuring the engaging National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, Tudor Hall Plantation, a recreated Military Encampment, and some of the best preserved earthworks in existence, this park relives the life and times of a soldier during America's "War Between the States."

Centre Hill Mansion

Built in 1823 by Robert Bolling IV, a Revolutionary War veteran and prominent citizen of Petersburg, Centre Hill remained a residence until 1936. Three presidents have visited the house: John Tyler, Abraham Lincoln, and William Howard Taft. In 1864 Confederate Lieutenant General James Longstreet made Centre Hill his headquarters, as did Union Major General George L. Hartsuff on April 5, 1865. President Lincoln met with General Hartsuff at the mansion on April 3, a mere 11 days before he was shot in Ford’s Theater in Washington. President Taft drew a huge crowd to the luncheon in his honor on the home and grounds during his 1909 visit. In 1901, Petersburg attorney Charles Hall Davis purchased the house and conducted a major restoration of the house and grounds. Mr. Davis experienced financial difficulties and he sold lots on the grounds. Centre Hill National Historic District surrounds the mansion, and the early 20th century homes in Centre Hill Court are a mix of bungalows, Colonial Revivals, and Foursquares. The house and property were sold at auction in 1936 and went through several hands before being deeded to the City in 1972. The mansion was featured in Steven Spielberg’s movie “Lincoln,” filmed in Petersburg just before Christmas 2011. The property is now Centre Hill Mansion Museum, a City of Petersburg museum. It features many superb 19th and 20th century pieces of furniture and decorative arts, many with local significance. The property is on the National Historic Register. Admission is charged, and tours are given every half hour. The site includes an orientation exhibition and gift shop with a fine selection of books. The Farmers Bank is located at: 19 Bollingbrook Street Petersburg, VA 23803 Call for hours of operation. There was only one Virginia bank in 1811 with statewide connections. In spite of fear of war with England. In 1812 the General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the Farmers Bank of Virginia to lend money to the United States. Originally seven branches opened, including the one in Petersburg; later nineteen branches were established around the state. Benjamin Hatcher was the first president of the Petersburg branch. Each branch had its own capital stock separate from the stock of the parent. The Petersburg branch was allowed to issue its own notes of circulation backed by specie, or gold. In 1817 the current Federal-style building at Bollingbrook St. and Markethouse Alley (later Bank Alley and now Cockade Alley) was constructed on property bought from Robert Bolling IV of Bollingbrook, who had just had the land raised to prevent flooding so that it could be developed. Bollingbrook St. was the first street in the city to be paved, in 1813. The three-story building contained banking activity on the first floor, with an apartment for the executive officer and his family on the upper floors. Behind the building were a smoke house for the residents and a guard house for the bank. These structures were rebuilt in the 1960s. The two-story kitchen was rebuilt in the 1980s on the foundations of the original building. Behind those buildings were a stable and carriage house where now there is a parking lot. During the Civil War, all money was in Confederate securities, which became worthless in April of 1865. The Farmers Bank of Virginia was liquidated in 1867 under the rules of the Reconstruction Government.

The museum was originally established in 1955 as the Women’s Army Corps Museum at Fort McClellan, Alabama. Blandford Church and Cemetery Visitor's Center

The Blandford Church is the oldest building in Petersburg, Virginia whose history is well documented. It is at the highest point in the city, atop Well's Hill. It is today part of a memorial to Southern soldiers who died during the Civil War. It is adjacent to Blandford Cemetery, which is much more important historically than the church. The Blandford Cemetery did not exist until after the church building had been abandoned, in the early 1800s, and the land purchased by the city to use as a cemetery. The Blandford Church, also known as St. Paul's Church or simply "The Brick Church", was erected in 1736 on Well's Hill, the highest point in Petersburg. In 1781, during the American Revolution, the Battle of Blandford, also known as the Battle of Petersburg, was fought nearby. Following the battle Major General William Phillips was ordered back to Petersburg to meet Lord Cornwallis who was moving north From Wilmington, North Carolina. While in Petersburg awaiting the arrival of Cornwallis, Phillips fell ill and died on 13 May 1781. He was secretly buried somewhere in the churchyard. The church building was abandoned in 1806 after the construction of another Episcopal church in Petersburg when the Town of Blandford in Prince George County was absorbed by Petersburg. It became "an ivy-clad picturesque shell." During the Civil War the church served as a major telegraph station. It was used as a field hospital, most notably after the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864. Necessary repairs for its preservation were made by the City of Petersburg in 1882. A Ladies' Memorial Association of Petersburg was founded in 1866 and took on preserving the former church as a memorial to the large number of Confederate soldiers buried in the adjacent cemetery. Some 30,000 were buried unidentified in mass graves. The windows were restored temporarily with clear glass. The Ladies Memorial Association requested from the eleven Confederate states, plus the slave states of Maryland and Missouri, funds to commission stained-glass windows. Only Kentucky declined. Between 1904 and 1912, windows were created and installed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Each of the large windows contains the image of a Saint, and symbols associated with that Saint. In addition to the thirteen state windows, Tiffany donated one, as did the Ladies Memorial Association. Petersburg National Battlefield & Visitor Center

This 2,700 acre park contains a 16-stop driving tour which takes visitors through all four units of Petersburg National Battlefield: General Grant's Headquarters at City Point (present day Hopewell), Virginia; The Eastern Front (where the initial assaults and the Battles of the Crater and Fort Stedman occurred); the Western Front, where intense fighting continued as Grant's Army encircled the city struggling to destory the last of Lee's supply lines; and the Five Forks Battlefield, a battle in which the outcome would eventually lead to the Confederates' retreat to Appomattox. The best place to begin your visit is the Eastern Front Visitor Center where you can view an overview video which will help you gain a general understanding of this 292 day event. The displays and artifacts within the visitor center provide insight into how intense the fighting was at Petersburg, as well as how miserable life was for soldiers living in trenches. After exploring the visitor center, you can continue down the park's four mile tour road where you will have the opportunity to walk on the same grounds where soldiers, including Native Americans, Blacks, and Whites, all fought for the fate of their nation. Ranger guided walks are scheduled at different times throughout the year. Visitors may also choose to walk the battlefields themselves where you will find numerous educational wayside exhibits. Cell phone tours and podcasts are also available at some locations. Searching for your Civil War ancestor? Park staff has numerous resources available at the Visitor Center to help you with your research. Maps are also available which may lead you to the exact site where your ancestor fought at Petersburg. Even if history is not your passion, and you're just looking for a beautiful place to hike, you're still at the right place. Petersburg National Battlefield has some of the most beautiful trail systems in south side Virginia. There are ten miles of wooded nature trails located within the Eastern Front Unit and eight miles of forested nature trails at the Five Forks Battlefield Unit. The Eastern Front trails are suitable for hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding while the Five Forks trails, at this time, are available to hikers and bicyclists.

Battersea Villa is open every Saturday from 1-4 PM for free tours to the public. In 250 years, America has declared independence, established the oldest written constitution, fought a Civil War, become first in flight, survived two World Wars, a Cold War, superseded racial segregation, and put man on the moon. In that same span of 250 years, Battersea estate has stood as a testament to American longevity in rich cultural history and heritage. In 1768, Colonel John Banister built Battersea near the bustling trade town of Petersburg, Virginia. It encapsulates the early beginnings of our country and America’s future successes with its own architectural grader and historical endurance. Banister was a Virginia statesman who wore many hats in the emerging political landscape of the late 18th century. He was Petersburg, Virginia's first mayor, a signer of the Articles of Confederation, and an integral player in the struggle for independence during the Revolutionary War. Among other contributions, Banister established Battersea as his country estate on the outskirts of Petersburg. Battersea is a Virginia Historic Landmark listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the finest surviving examples of Palladian architecture in America. Modeled after the architectural designs of Italian Andrea Palladio, Battersea's characteristic five-part symmetrical layout subscribes to neo-Palladian and Federal styles that were popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Along with its architectural significance, Battersea has also had a vibrant past. Notable events include the quartering of British troops in the home on three separate occasions, as well as the construction of the unique and historic greenhouse on the property c. 1830.
