You won't want to miss this hip coffee shop and bakery down the block. Highly recommended for the cinnamon rolls and BLT sandwiches! On weekend mornings, I recommend getting there on the early side - long lines are pretty standard from 9:30am onward.

Blue Duck does farm to table very well - they've even got the Michelin star to prove it now! Relatively inexpensive and low-key, I recommend stopping in for an early dinner before catching a show at the nearby Kennedy Center. A popular fundraising spot, it can get a bit tougher to grab a table on weeks when Congress is in session. Luckily, they offer their full menu (you can even order to-go!) at the bar.

Drinks & Nightlife

El Rey is located in the heart of the super hip U Street area. A half bar, half restaurant, this place is 100 percent a good time! Great margaritas (the frozen version is almost alarmingly potent!), tacos, and elote are available while enjoying the music and hip, generally young(ish) scene. I find this to a great first stop for a night of bar/party hopping!

Love a good dive bar? Ivy and Coney is the place for you! A cash-only (don't worry, there is an atm on site) Chicago/Detroit bar, the drinks are always cheap and cold. If you're looking to catch any sporting event without shelling out a ton of money, stop by and check out the scene.

Parks & Nature

DC has a ton of green spaces and the National Arboretum is one that definitely shouldn't be overlooked! I definitely recommend heading up this way for a bike ride, run, or short hike. It's a little more out of the way that other attractions, giving it legitimate hidden gem status!

Teddy Roosevelt Island is where you go to get away from it all! Once you cross the bridge connecting the island to the Roslyn, Virginia entrance, you'll think you're in the wilderness. Several miles of unpaved trails make this a runner or walker's paradise. Best of all, its pet friendly so you'll be sure to see lots of friendly dogs throughout your hike!
