No more than 300 yards from your apartment is lovely Riverside Park. It boasts sweeping views of the historic James River in the gorge below. Wide, paved footpaths as well as more difficult, wooded trails offer a great way to enjoy the natural landscape of the city. Impressive views of the iron railroad bridge as well as remains of an old tobacco barge are worth a visit. A newly installed playground makes this a good place to take the kids, too.
Also, be sure to read the historic marker of the former park pool. It tells a jarring story of the city's history.
The Miller-Claytor house nestled on the grounds is also worth a visit. The house was relocated from a nearby site. It's 19th century design remains faithfully intact and the garden supporting the house was designed by a world-renowned landscape architect in the early 1900s.

See the vacation home of Thomas Jefferson. Poplar Forest was designed by the former president and was his secondary residence away from Monticello in the latter years of his life. Fully restored to its original standing. Tours are available and required to view the interior.

The best place on the Blue Ridge parkway near our place! It’s always accessible regardless of the weather (the parkway closes sections during the winter) and the starting point for beautiful hikes up Sharp Top and Flat Top mountain. The area also has a walking trail around a lake and Adirondack chairs to relax. It’s great!

The best place on the Blue Ridge parkway near our place! Where the Blue Ridge Parkway and the James River meet is a great park and closest entry point for the Blue Ridge Parkway from our place. Stop at the park just north of where highway 501 connects with the Parkway. Just a mile up the parkway from the James River is the Otter River dam. It’s a swimming hole in the summer and displays beautiful rhododendron flowers in May.

Stop at the park just north of where highway 501 connects with the Parkway. Just a mile up the parkway from the James River is the Otter River dam. It’s a swimming hole in the summer and displays beautiful rhododendron flowers in May.

I recommend getting on the highway just beyond Big Island and then heading south on the Parkway until you reach Peaks of Otter where you can take time to explore. Then, turn onto Highway 43 which will take you to Bedford and from there, you can return to Lynchburg on Highway 221 E. It’s great for a drive with several commanding viewpoints and also provides access to the Appalachian Trail at several of the pull off areas. For those who enjoy hiking the quickest place to get onto the trail is at Thunder Ridge.
