• Kohukohu is one of four heritage areas in Northland and has a self-guided heritage walk with photographs of the early settlement that you can enjoy at your leisure. We find it a wonderful place to be and thoroughly enjoy the mix of people, the café, the pub, the art galleries and the library.
• From Kohukohu, a short ferry ride across the harbour takes you to Rawene, another small town rich in history, art, and a great over-the-water cafe.
• A bit further on, you can learn about the history of Kupe the Voyager at the newly opened 'Footprints of Kupe' in Opononi (https://maneafootprints.co.nz/), or catch a water taxi here to ride the sand dunes. The beaches in Opononi and Omapere are family-friendly.
• There are also the newly refurbished hot springs in Ngawha https://www.ngawha.nz/, or walk the Wairere Boulders, and enjoy cooling off in their open swimming hole (https://wairereboulders.co.nz/)
