In the northern part of Istria, overlooking the Mirna River valley, lies surely the most famous and attractive Istrian medieval town of Motovun-Montona. This captivating hilltop town is one of the characteristic symbols of the Istrian interior. The Romanesque-Gothic bell tower with a crenulated crown from the 13th century, standing next to the Parish Church of St. Stephen from the 17th century, dominates the town's historic core. In the central square is the Romanesque Municipal Palace, the largest secular building in Istria of that period surrounded by many other historic buildings. As Motovun-Montona has long since been an attractive and popular tourist destination accommodation is offered in the town centre, in hotel Kaštel situated in the restored palace of the Polesini family. Motovun-Montona is the perfect venue for a large number of events, the most significant among them being the International Motovun Film Festival that takes place at the end of July where world-known film artists may be seen. Motovun is also interesting for ballooning lovers, its favourable microclimate enables flying in balloons all year round, so that Motovun-Montona hosts several ballooning events. Motovun Forest which stretches along the Mirna River valley is especially rich in truffles, the underground malodorous fungus believed to be an aphrodisiac. Istrian white truffles, whose season lasts from September to December are said to be as good as the finest Italian and French truffles. Opposite Motovun-Montona stands the charming picturesque town of Oprtalj-Portole, as well as Livade, famous for the Days of Truffles held every year from September to November. Every year in Livade, also known as the World's truffle centre, a special festival is organized with a contest of choosing the largest truffle. Motovun-Montona is surrounded by vineyards from which the finest Istrian wines, white wine Malvasia and red wine Teran, are produced. The entire area is dotted with excellent local ‘konobe’ and restaurants. In close vicinity is also Istarske toplice, thermal spa with curative water.

Grožnjan-Grisignana, a small Istrian town of great cultural significance not only in Croatia but also internationally, lives its summer months very intensely. Every year at the beginning of May, the little streets and squares of Grožnjan-Grisignana metamorphose and turn into a truly artistic beehive: it opens its summer music academies for young people, its artistic, dance and drama workshops and its peace activism workshops under the leadership of well-known experts and teachers and famous names from music, art and drama. During those few summer months Grožnjan-Grisignana lives and breathes art and the labyrinth of its little streets become one great stage on which are constantly interchanging the sounds of jazz and classical music, guitar and piano, violin and cello, drum and vibraphone...

Motovun Film Festival is a festival with a soul! It is primarily dedicated to the films from small cinematographies and independent productions; films that excel with their innovative approach, ideas and intense stories; films that have a hard time fighting their way to theaters and wide audiences under the conditions of an unequal market competition. The idea behind our film program is to reflect diversity – esthetical, thematic, geographical… As many films from as many countries as possible, in order to show that the world of film is much wider and more colorful than it often seems. With its selection of films and guests of honor, the festival celebrates the authors sticking to their artistic stubbornness, unconventionality and originality at all costs. With films and direct communication between filmmakers and film lovers we want to create a cozy spot for those who enjoy the magic of cinema. Motovun Film Festival may want to be a carefree festival but it is also a festival that cares about the world it is in. This is why the side programs that promote unquestionable social values and tackle controversies are a constant component of the festival. Motovun wants to be a small festival – in everything except in its ambitions and quality. We don't want to grow and overtake others. We want to be a place where weary cinematic riders can rest their souls and where their films are shown to benevolent audiences on a beautiful spot under a mild summer night sky.

Parenzana was a narrow gauge railway which connected Trieste with Porec, operating from 1902 until 1935 and was eliminated due to unprofitability, because of cheaper and faster road transportation. Project Parenzana II: The renewal of the route of health and friendship (from 09/2009 to 03/2012) is direct sequel of the project PARENZANA I: The route of health and friendship (from 04/2006 to 06/2008). Owing to the excellent results of the previous two projects and the importance of Parenzana as an artery of tourism development in northwestern Istria, the Parenzana project was applied again under the Operational Programme IPA Slovenia-Croatia 2007-2013, with the name of Parenzana Magic.
