Food Scene

A traditional country pub with consistently good reviews for its food and local ales. The restaurant is smart. The bar is less so and dogs are allowed. Donkeys and ponies often hang out on the lanes around here so drive carefully. Since 1990, the pub has been owned by Dire Straits bassist John Illsley.

Jump on the ferry or take a brisk stroll on the 1.5 mile long shingle spit to the famous Hurst Castle where a £1 million renovation is currently taking place to keep it ship shape. This place is just the best for hide and seek. The view from the top is superb to the Isle of Wight. Anyone who likes history will love it here. Charles I was imprisoned here. The cafe is excellent. Read our blog for more info on Jason Crane, 3rd generation born here at Hurst. There is a small entry fee. Boat trips are about £5 for a return trip.

Forestry Commission site, just pay the car parking. Nice little visitor centre. Good cafe. Great tracks for walking and good access for mobility scooter vehicles. 20 mins from the house. The walking from the house is nicer than the walking at Moors Valley but the play grounds in the woods there are unbeatable. So defo take small kids. They’ll love it.

All sorts of little stores in the village. Good selection of pubs. Wild ponies always in the village and wander through seemingly oblivious of traffic.
