Concalma's bags are probably one of locals favorite totes. Designed by our friend Matilsha, Concalma, which means "with calm”, aims to raise awareness of fair trade, the importance of local design and manufacturing as well as promoting sustainable practices. In her store she also sells products from Puerto Rican designers and artists. Another great place to get that special souvenir.

Neighborhoods

Miramar is a historic neighborhood home to several structures registered at the National Register of Historic Places, such as Casa Aboy-Lompré, a cultural center that was declared a historic building in the year 1989, focusing on the preservation and creation of photographic art. Another example is the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel, declared a historic building in the year 1984. Miramar is an exclusive residential neighborhood where primarily middle to upper-class families reside, characterized by quiet streets lined with large, mature shade trees. There are still a handful of historical residences with the charm and atmosphere from the bygone era including several Prairie School architectural style buildings by internationally renowned architect Antonin Nechodoma. To the east there's "barrio Gandul", a sub-neighborhood that has become the hub of the street art festival 'Santurce es Ley'.

PLAZA DEL MERCADCO aka LA PLACITA Santurce's famous produce market – La Placita – is also the hub of one of San Juan's hottest nightlife scenes. Especially good on Thursday and Friday nights, the historic market plaza and its surrounding streets host what becomes a veritable street party; people meeting up after work, eating, drinking and, as soon as the salsa band warms up, dancing until the early hours.

One of our favorite cultural hubs in Old San Juan, La Casa de los Contrafuertes is an open workshop, where the creative wills of a growing group of co-authors coincide. Among books, literary encounters, sculptures, movie nights, sound works, theater, design, the aroma of coffee, the surprises of the garden and the denseness of honey, this place always has something interesting going on.

One of our favorite places in Old San Juan, El Bastion is a multidisciplinary cultural center recovered and self-managed by a group of artists, with the intention of promoting the development of the arts in general. The historic building abandoned for decades, was rehabilitated with much love by the same artists that worked tirelessly for a year. Much of the material used in the rehabilitation was recycled from the same space, changing the shape and location, to get a better use of it. In El Bastión, residences are generated for artists nationally and internationally. It is a space where something cool is always happening.
