If you don't do anything else in Lisbon, you HAVE to try these pastries. ou'll see them sold everywhere but the ones in this place are the original ones (made to a centuries-old-to-this-day-kept-secret recipe) and are actually called differently (the ones sold anywhere else are called Pastéis de Nata).

The best sea food in Lisbon. While they serve the best sea food, they don't really serve fish dishes...) You'll probably see people queuing up at the door (though it's usually quite quick (10 mins) to get a table). This is a traditional Lisbon hang out and not too touristy, so expect people pigging out on delicious sea food, endless pints and addictive homemade toasted bread *literally!* dripping with butter! Our usual order (for 3 to share - but if you tell them how many will be sharing they'll adjust the amount of food) is the Gambas al Ajillo (fat shrimps fried in Portuguese extra virgin olive oil and garlic), Clams (in a delicious-you-have-to-dip-your-bread-in-it! sauce) followed either by the Crayfish or the grilled Tiger Shrimp. It's not cheap food (though not too expensive either, between 15-20€ per person), but it's absolutely amazing.

For the proper Portuguese grilled chicken ("Chicken Peri-Peri"). They also do delicious fries and an amazing "esparregado" (the Portuguese version of spinach mornay, without the cheese).

It's a century market transformed in 2014. It was dived: on one side you have the traditional market; on the other a food hall with canteen-style communal tables. It mixes stalls from top chefs with different brands of local products, and the foods range from seafood to steak sandwiches, hamburgers, sushi and ice cream, among other specialties. The drink stands are in the center.

You should visit during the day and then again at night for a completely different experience. During the day, you can check out the fashionable shops alongside the traditional ones (my favourite handmade hat shop is in Rua da Rosa!) that have been there for generations. There's also cool coffee/tea houses where famous writers used to spend their time. At night, it's a maze of little bars and fado houses. You can get cheap wine, beer or cocktails, served in plastic cups so you can take them out to the street and hang out with the rest of the crowd (the dress code is casual and comfortable).

Cascais started out as a little fishing village and is now a very fashionable place. It also has some pretty good beaches and is only a few minutes away (on a cool scenic train ride) from downtown Lisbon. Estoril is the whole surrounding area (includes Cascais and Sintra) - I thought I'd mention both as people are bound to recommend them and this way you'll know what they're talking about!

For many years it was an abandoned city area, wich started with a fabric production plant... Today, the space is home to more than 200 businesses ranging from cafés, restaurants, design houses, show-rooms, shops, offices, commercial spaces to other projects that link directly to the space’s unique cultural and artistic standing.

It's a Lisbon institution and winds around the Lisbon hills through most of the must see places.

Lisboa Card

Gives you unlimited travel, including on trains to Sintra and Cascais, as well as free/discounted entrance to some attractions. I'd see if you intend to go to any of these museums/monuments as otherwise the normal transport card works out cheaper.

Viva Viagem

It's available on all tube stations (the ticket machines will sell them). It costs 0,50€ and then you can top it up to a maximum of 20€ and get each trip deducted, or get a 24h travel ticket (6,45€). You can use it on the tube ("metro"), on the buses and even on certain trains (for example, to nearby Cascais and Sintra).
