Sightseeing

The historic City of Lincoln, just 8 miles away from the Guesthouse is a must see for any travellers to the area. Originally built on the site of an ancient Iron Age settlement, the Roman's conquered the area and founded the city in 48CE (with many Roman remains still visible including elements of the City Wall). The City is most famous for its immense Medieval Gothic Cathedral (built 1072 to 1311), once the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1548). It is also famous for the amazingly preserved Lincoln Castle (built by William the Conqueror in the late 11th Century), which currenly houses one of the original copies of the Magna Carta, has walls that can be walked around with amazing views and regularly hosts events, festivals and farmers markets within the walls. Most famous of all is the Lincoln Christmas Market, usually running in the 1st Thursday to Sunday of December each year. Close by is the picturesque Bailgate area, featuring numerous boutique shops and restaurants. This leads to the infamous and aptly names Steep Hill, lined with many fantastic small shops and cafes and links Historic Lincoln with the main town centre. Anyone who ever says Lincolnshire is flat, has clearly never been to Lincoln. In the main town, there are many great shops, bars and restaurants with a vibrant nightlife.
