Stunning Views of Mourne Mountains and a secluded beach! If you visit the village of Annagassan, it is hard to imagine that Ireland’s largest city could be right here and not in Dublin. Background of this thesis is that near Annagassan there was a Longphort of the Vikings with the name Linn Duachaill, which was founded at the same time as the Viking settlement Dubh Linn – today Dublin. In their early days, both settlements competed for supremacy on the East Coast. Finally, Dublin prevailed, Linn Duachaill was abandoned and rediscovered in 2010. A must-visit for breathtaking, natural views.

Already in the late 6th century a first monastery was built in Dromiskin. The oldest preserved buildings are the hull of a round tower (9th century) and the head of a high cross (10th century). The special thing about this high cross is that it is not Bible motifs, but Celtic symbols and mythical creatures that are at the centre. A sculpture of a Viking ship erected next to the monastery reminds of the eventful past and the raids of the Northmen.

Visit-Worthy Town

A bustling town, full of shops, cafes, restaurants, and history! Founded by the Vikings, the city on the Boyne River has some remarkable monuments to visit, such as St. Laurence Gate from the 13th century, which looks more like a fortress than a city gate. The Millmount Fort is located on a hill under which an ancient tomb is suspected. The Martello Tower on the summit was built in 1808 and was part of the surrounding barracks.

The Battle of the Boyne is one of the most significant events in Irish history, part of a wider struggle for power across 17th century Europe. The Battle of the Boyne was fought between King William III and his father-in-law King James II on 1 July 1690. The kings were rival claimants to the English, Scottish and Irish thrones. Protestant King William (of Orange) had deposed Catholic King James in 1688. James went to Ireland where he rallied his mostly Catholic army, making a stand on the banks of the Boyne outside Drogheda. The battle is brought to life using a laser battle site model, audio visual film, real and replica weaponry and interactive guided tours. The Visitor Centre is located in the restored 18th century Oldbridge House surrounded by Victorian Gardens and battle site walks. http://battleoftheboyne.ie/

The Forest Park embracing part of the Cabra Estate formerly owned by the Pratt family is situated in the Parish of Enniskeen. The Romantic Glen of the Cabra River, stretching the full length of the Park, is an area steeped in history and legend. It is said that Cuchulain camped there at night while by day conducting his single-handed defense of Ulster against the armies of Maeve. The Normans were here also and in later years the glen echoed to the sounds of Cromwell's armies. Dun a Rí Forest Park is a place of beauty. Situated in a tranquil glen, Dun a Rí is home to stoat, hare, mink, rabbit and otter, as well as red and grey squirrel along the banks of the River Cabra, which runs through the park. Take a romantic walk through deep, leafy glades over old bridges with marvelous views north to Slieve Gullion in County Armagh and the Mountains of Mourne. Some interesting features in the park include Cromwell's bridge, a wishing well, and an ice house. There are four walks of approximately 1.5 -2km in length in the park.
