Bird Watching
A 48 Kilometer drive from the farmstay, Nal Sarovar is one the largest Wetland in India attracting over 200 species of migratory birds from as far away as Siberia, Oman, Yemen, etc. A 3-4 hour boat ride is managed by Local Operators and shall ideally be done before dawn to enjoy the Sunrise, pleasant chill and marvelous symphony of birds flocking together farming a sight not to miss. By brunch time, you can enjoy delicious traditional mini-meals cooked on the island by native tribes.

Apart from 150 species of birds, one can also spot black bucks, jackals and blue bulls in the vicinity. The protected area is great for waterfowl during monsoons and winters. Most travellers come to see thousands of flamingoes in the winters, covering the landscape in pink. Migratory birds like great white pelicans, mallards, geese, sarus cranes and many other waders make the sanctuary their home in the winters.

The flamboyant 15th-century stepwell, has lost only little of its grandeur over the last few centuries. Till date, the intricate carvings on the pillars that support the five storeys are mostly intact; the beams work as pit stops for pigeons flying in and out and the structure still leaves jaws dropped for swarms of people. The step-well represents the Indo-Islamic fusion architecture that percolated through the many stepwells of the period. There are some fascinating features of the vav that make this an important emblem of superior architecture. The opening in the ceilings above the landing allows light and air to enter the octagonal well, but direct sunlight never touches the steps except at noon. It is said that the temperature inside the well is six degrees cooler than outside. The stepwell has three entrances. The stairs lead to an underground storey, which has an octagonal opening on top. The walls are covered in ornamental carvings with mythological and village scenes. Some of them include Ami khumbor (a pot that contains the water of life) and the Kalp vriksha (a tree of life) carved out of a single slab of stone. There is a belief that the small frieze of Navagraha (nine-planets) towards the edge of the well protects the monument from bad omens.

And there are extremely strict kitchen rules that the entire staff follows.
The food is served in a leaf plate, making the plates biodegradable, disposable, hygienic and convenient to use. They also lend a rustic and authentic touch to the food. These plates also provide employment to a large number of villagers, for whom, making these plates are the only source of income. The food philosophy followed at Vishalla is very simple – everything is made each day, with the help of seasonal vegetables and utmost attention to cleanliness. The Gujarati thali served here is a perfect example of what a balanced diet looks like – from the right serving of carbohydrates to the appropriate proportion of fiber and protein – it is nutrition and taste rolled into one. Another very important aspect of Vishalla’s food heritage is that it adheres to some very ancient techniques of cooking, serving and eating food. Guests, no matter how important they might be, are served food as they sit cross-legged in the floor. This is known to aide digestion. You are also offered a knee-support or ‘dhichanyu’ as we call it in Gujarati – an apparatus used to support the knee while sitting on the floor. It is known to be crucial in the prevention of various illnesses like hernia and is a feature that is only provided at Vishalla.

It comes to life in the evening with make-shift food stalls sprawling up, however, good options are available all throughout the day such as the Kheema Samosa, Haleem, Seekh Kebab, Biryani, Bheja, Chaap, Barah Handi, Jalebi, Sewai, Gulab Jamun, Malpua and so on. This a predominantly for Non-Veg eaters comfortable with spicy and oily food. Won't come on top of the list for health freaks.
