Haena State Park has amazing snorkeling, the infamous Kalalau Trail and is a fabulous place to watch the sun set. It's a great place for families to spend at the beach. The hike is quite difficult so may not be good for younger children. Be sure to bring plenty of water and food.
It is at the end of the road on the North Shore of Kauai. It is so special that reservations are now required to enter Ha'ena State Park which includes the Kalalau Trail and Ke'e Beach. The Park has a limit of visitors each day. Reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance and no later than the day before your visit however in our experience, they release the permits at midnight Kauai time (30 days in advance) and they are gone within a few minutes. You can make reservations at www.gohaena.com. (Note: If it won’t let you select a voucher for the day and time specified, they are sold out for that time. Choose another date or time.) Prior to COVID they had implemented a shuttle service because parking at Haena is also very limited. Reservations are also required for the shuttle at www.kauaiNSshuttle.com. Parking at Haena costs $5 and the shuttle costs $11/person.

You will need to rent a car to get around.
Uber may be available near the airport but you will wait hours to try and find someone anywhere else on the island so a car rental is essential.
Especially around the holidays, car rentals can book quickly so be sure to reserve one in advance.
For longer term stays, some folks rent our their own vehicles. You will need to search the web to see who is still in business after the pandemic.

Na Pali Coast Catamaran
Many people dream of seeing the uninhabited part of the island - the Na Pali Coast. It is absolutely a won't want to miss activity. It is important to note however that it is generally not available during the winter months due to the high waves. The North Shore has all the waves in the winter, the South Shore gets them in the summer.
A catamaran will be your smoothest ride and it is highly recommended you take Dramamine prior to your trip. You can either leave from the west shore - Port Allen or from Hanalei. If you leave from Hanalei you get to see more of the Na Pali Coast.
