Sightseeing

There is a lot to do in the forest, the lakeside track that runs around the reservoir is great for walking and cycling and is seldom especially busy, and if you get away from the water onto the logging roads you'll rarely see another person. We recommend: -a walk up to Elf Kirk from the house for views over the lake at sunset -trying to lose the kids in the maze next to Kielder Castle -Viewing the Ospreys nesting from telescopes at the pub at Kielder Waterside -Doing the augmented reality Gruffalo trail at Kielder castle and bird watching in the hide (and red squirrels if you are lucky!) -Hiring bikes and doing the whole 26 mile circumference of the reservoir -visiting the observatory (book ahead) -scavenging for bilberries (like a blueberry) that grow wild round the lake and on the moors in August/September (also wild raspberries and blackberries in abundance) -If your car is suitably robust the unpaved forest track from Kielder to the A68 is great fun (toll charge and closed in bad weather) -Spotting wild deer roaming -we most often see them on the grassy bank towards the bottom of the dam wall -trying the zip wire and other activities at Calvert Trust, its great fun and supports a fantastic charity

Probably the most photographed tree in the UK, Sycamore Gap is located on the Steel Rigg to Housesteads section of Hadrian's wall which we think is the most dramatic and picturesque part of the Roman wall, there's also a new visitor centre nearby at the Sill and the Twice Brewed Inn. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hadrians-wall-and-housesteads-fort/trails/housesteads-to-steel-rigg-circular-walk

Located on top of the fell about a mile outside of Kielder village the observatory is well worth a visit and is fun and educational for all ages. It is very popular and the evening star gazing sessions sell out months in advance so booking ahead is necessary.

Food scene

The Black Cock Inn is a fantastic local pub less than a minutes walk from the house. Friendly staff, lovely home cooked food and a good selection of local ales, craft gin etc. There is also a pool table and jukebox. As a family run pub (and a popular one) the kitchen can often struggle with larger parties, so booking well ahead is essential for food.
