The castle is a must for those who love history and the church tower is definitely a family favourite, although we never seem to agree on how many steps there are to the top. This market town is worth a whole day of exploration and you can cool your feet in the weir with the locals if you are feeling daring at the end of your day.

40 minutes drive away is Much Wenlock, which is described as being "the town that inspired the modern Olympic Games". We discovered Bridgnorth when we went on the Severn Valley Railway. It is a really quaint town with beautiful architecture and steeped in history located about 50 minutes away. The castle and Victorian public gardens are well worth a visit. Apparently the castle tower leans at a sharper angle than the leaning tower of Pisa and you certainly don't feel inclined to stand directly beneath it!

We discovered Bridgnorth when we went on the Severn Valley Railway. It is a really quaint town with beautiful architecture and steeped in history located about 50 minutes away. The castle and Victorian public gardens are well worth a visit. Apparently the castle tower leans at a sharper angle than the leaning tower of Pisa and you certainly don't feel inclined to stand directly beneath it!

25 minutes away is the market town of Shrewsbury. The back streets are enchanting as the architecture dates back centuries. The park is stunning with the majestic River Severn meandering past its boundary and the red sandstone of the castle is magnificent set above the assorted town buildings below. There is so much history associated with this town and certainly one of our favourite stops is the museum.

There is so much history associated with this town and certainly one of our favourite stops is the museum.
Recently discovered by our 18 year old son during one of his exploration day trips, Broseley is a wonderful example of a Shropshire market town. He has told us that it is a "must" for our own list of places to see. It is also home to two of the Ironbridge museums.

Historic building
We couldn't create a guidebook without mentioning the church as it is surrounded by our paddocks. In fact the stones of the original abbey can still be seen poking out of the grass. Visitors to the church often remark on the peace and serenity within the building and outside.
The churchyard featured on Countryfile in 2020 as it is a God's Green Acre site, boasting more than 100 different wild flowers. It is beautifully maintained inside and out and is a haven for wildlife, including hedgehogs and weasels.
Mown paths carefully wend their way between the wildflowers until August when the whole graveyard is scythed to produce green hay for distributing locally to spread the wildflower seeds.
Do look out for the memorial to the last sin eater in England, which is conveniently located on the edge of the tarmac path.

The Bog mine once had 300 buildings and featured an amazing aerial ropeway. It is set in a legendary geological landscape and noted in folklore for the exploits of Wild Edric.
The centre is staffed by local volunteers who are always happy to share their knowledge of the area.
With ample car parking it is the ideal starting point for many walks around the Stiperstones National Nature Reserve, and is noted for its warm welcome and local home baked refreshments."

You then emerge into the sunlight and the beauty of the red sandstone takes your breath away. We have spent many happy hours sitting with our backs to the cornfield on its boundary, just gazing at this wonderful building. There is an information board near the surrounding trees which provide the perfect shade if you don't like sitting in the glare of the sun. It is well worth the 30 minute drive from the lodge.

You then emerge into the sunlight and the beauty of the red sandstone takes your breath away. We have spent many happy hours sitting with our backs to the cornfield on its boundary, just gazing at this wonderful building. There is an information board near the surrounding trees which provide the perfect shade if you don't like sitting in the glare of the sun. It is well worth the 30 minute drive from the lodge.

The castle itself is so full of history that we still haven't scratched the surface after many visits. The volunteers are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic with a captive audience and it's easy to lose track of time. The gardens are just stunning. It is a multi-faceted garden, taking advantage of everything the different seasons have to offer. The café serves delicious teas and if you sit outside you may be joined by the peacocks, which strut around the castle grounds, often popping out of the shrubbery unexpectedly.
Blists Hill forms part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums which are a World Heritage Site and is about 50 minutes away. This destination is without doubt the most popular of all our visits made with our house visitors over the years. It appeals to adults and children alike and is a great place to visit, whatever the weather. We highly recommend the Annual Passport ticket as it is such good value for money, particularly as it is valid for a year and covers many different attractions.

It appeals to adults and children alike and is a great place to visit, whatever the weather. This is "one of the finest surviving fortified manor houses in England" and is 30 minutes from us on the A49 just before Stokesay Court. It is an English Heritage site so don't forget your membership card if you have one.

This is our favourite pub and is about 10 minutes drive away in the village of Wentnor. It is such a family favourite that it's the only one we regularly visit. Adrian the landlord is so friendly and always does his best to fit you in, even if it's at the last minute. The portions are great and it's very good value for money. The Sunday Carvery is extremely popular for a good reason and it is highly recommended that you book as it is such a favourite with the locals.

We love this tappas bar near the Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury. We have always sat outside and the walled garden has the most lovely atmosphere. We have only tried it at lunchtimes and it is certainly very popular.

This is our home and is the reason we moved here. It's 8000 acres of absolute bliss whether you like to walk, cycle or ride a horse. It's rarely muddy but be warned as it's usually 3 degrees cooler than in the valleys below and it often serves up a "breeze". You feel so connected to nature up here with the sounds of the wild ponies, sheep and birds and it literally feels like being on top of world when you stop at the Trig Point near Pole Bank as it offers a spectacular panoramic view.

It's a nice uphill walk from the Shooting Box car park or alternatively, drive to the T junction on the top of the Mynd and turn towards the Midland Glider Club. There are various car parks or demarcated verges in which you can park.

The reservoir is a quick 10 minutes from the car, past the Hill Fort view point. You can then choose to continue uphill onto the Burway which is the road crossing the Long Mynd.
Alternatively, take the longer route to the waterfall which is about 20 minutes from the top car park. Those who can climb the rocky path to the side of the waterfall can make their way upwards towards the Jack Mytton Way. From there you can choose a proper hike or perhaps make your way back off the JMW down the other path into/out of Cardingmill Valley.
Another route onto the Burway is at the entrance to the car park on your left as you enter and this often forms part of a circular route for walkers.
Our absolute favourite is the very steep path up towards the Iron Age fort (and the Golf Club). There are so many options and these walks are as long or as short as you want which makes it ideal for different likes and abilities.
When you finish you can either relax in the NT café or bring your own refreshments and paddle in the shallow brook as it makes its way down towards the town.
** WILD WATER SWIMMING **
If this is your thing then you have come to the right place. If you drive back over the Long Mynd towards Church Stretton, you can either park above the reservoir or drive down into the town and into the National Trust car park and walk from there. This is a wonderfully peaceful place to stop on the way back from Shrewsbury. The car park is found on the road with the White Horse at Pulverbatch on your right. Climbing to the top of the mounds (there are paths) you will find a bench on which to rest and enjoy the wonderful view. There is a very informative noticeboard in the car park and you certainly feel a sense of history. It's one of our places to stop and sit with a flask and a biscuit or two, whatever the season.
