Local Shopping

If you don't fancy driving over the Mynd for bits and pieces, the village of Wentnor is about 8 minutes drive away. The stores themselves are just off the main road and amongst other things they sell ice creams which are very good value for money. This is a small, rural shop so please check opening times. To ensure you have all your provisions, we advise a stop off at Church Stretton or Craven Arms to shop in larger supermarkets before you arrive.

This newsagent/hardware store in Church Stretton (now called Vine & Co) deserves a special mention as they went above and beyond for vulnerable local residents during lockdown and continued with this service. Not only do they have a well equipped newsagent section including a wonderful selection of cards, but also they have a wide range of quality hardware and haberdashery items to cover every eventuality. The icing on the cake is the plentiful supply of freshly made coffee and organic bottled milk from its vending machines.

This is another must for plant lovers as it is situated just down the road from the Derwen Garden Centre in Welshpool about 45 minutes' drive from us. Not only does it stock a fabulous selection of plants, but it also provides an opportunity to look around the garden (for a small fee). It's a typical nursery without fripperies and the staff are incredibly helpful.

Church Stretton is our local market town which is about 12 minutes drive away over the Long Mynd. It is popular with tourists and it has a wide variety of shops catering for all interests and needs. There is a good sized Co-Op and a late night opening general store for last minute items. It has a very good food and produce market on Thursdays in the Market Square.

We love this beautiful town as there's so much to see. It is 40 minutes away and has an active market and an ecclectic mix of shops. The architecture around the town is breathtaking and locals obviously take great pride in their properties. The castle is a must for those who love history and the church tower is definitely a family favourite, although we never seem to agree on how many steps there are to the top. This market town is worth a whole day of exploration and you can cool your feet in the weir with the locals if you are feeling daring at the end of your day.

We discovered Bridgnorth when we went on the Severn Valley Railway. It is a really quaint town with beautiful architecture and steeped in history located about 50 minutes away. The castle and Victorian public gardens are well worth a visit. Apparently the castle tower leans at a sharper angle than the leaning tower of Pisa and you certainly don't feel inclined to stand directly beneath it!

25 minutes away is the market town of Shrewsbury. We feel so lucky to live near a town with such a diverse range of sights to see, activities to take part in, eateries to indulge in and shopping to enjoy. There are plenty of car parks and it is fairly level to get around although there is one steep hill to climb near the entrance to the main town via the English Bridge. The back streets are enchanting as the architecture dates back centuries. The park is stunning with the majestic River Severn meandering past its boundary and the red sandstone of the castle is magnificent set above the assorted town buildings below. There is so much history associated with this town and certainly one of our favourite stops is the museum.

Historic building

We couldn't create a guidebook without mentioning the church as it is surrounded by our paddocks. In fact the stones of the original abbey can still be seen poking out of the grass. Visitors to the church often remark on the peace and serenity within the building and outside. The churchyard featured on Countryfile in 2020 as it is a God's Green Acre site, boasting more than 100 different wild flowers. It is beautifully maintained inside and out and is a haven for wildlife, including hedgehogs and weasels. Mown paths carefully wend their way between the wildflowers until August when the whole graveyard is scythed to produce green hay for distributing locally to spread the wildflower seeds. Do look out for the memorial to the last sin eater in England, which is conveniently located on the edge of the tarmac path.

Taken direct from the Shropshire Guide... "The Bog Visitor Centre, in the shadow of the Stiperstones in Shropshire, is a gas-lit Victorian former school which is one of the few remaining buildings of a lost lead and barytes-mining village. The Bog mine once had 300 buildings and featured an amazing aerial ropeway. It is set in a legendary geological landscape and noted in folklore for the exploits of Wild Edric. The centre is staffed by local volunteers who are always happy to share their knowledge of the area. With ample car parking it is the ideal starting point for many walks around the Stiperstones National Nature Reserve, and is noted for its warm welcome and local home baked refreshments." It is only a short hop over the hill from the Stiperstones and if you are interested in the history of mining or perhaps you are making your way towards the Stiperstones village it is well worth a visit. Opening times are seasonal so do check the website and/or the Google listing for the latest times.

This is our favourite local picnic spot as very few people seems to have discovered it. There is an informal car park beneath the trees with a small gate leading to the dark woodland beyond. You then emerge into the sunlight and the beauty of the red sandstone takes your breath away. We have spent many happy hours sitting with our backs to the cornfield on its boundary, just gazing at this wonderful building. There is an information board near the surrounding trees which provide the perfect shade if you don't like sitting in the glare of the sun. It is well worth the 30 minute drive from the lodge.

This is by far our favourite National Trust property near us and is about 40 minutes away, depending on which route you choose. The castle itself is so full of history that we still haven't scratched the surface after many visits. The volunteers are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic with a captive audience and it's easy to lose track of time. The gardens are just stunning. It is a multi-faceted garden, taking advantage of everything the different seasons have to offer. The café serves delicious teas and if you sit outside you may be joined by the peacocks, which strut around the castle grounds, often popping out of the shrubbery unexpectedly.

Eating Out

**** FEB 2024 - This pub is currently CLOSED - we would recommend The Inn on the Green in Wentnor if you are looking for pub food nearby. **** We are so lucky to have this pub just 10 minutes' walk along our footpath whilst following the brook downstream. HOWEVER, it remains very hit and miss at the moment, particularly as it is undergoing major refurbishment so it definitely isn't somewhere we would recommend for food. Some of our guests have tried it with a degree of success and others (including ourselves) without. Booking would be essential if you want to risk it as food is not always served. They sometimes offer daytime and evening entertainment, details of which can be found on their social media. Always check the opening times or ring to book a table as our local pubs sometimes close on a Monday.

This is our favourite pub and is about 10 minutes drive away in the village of Wentnor. It is such a family favourite that it's the only one we regularly visit. Adrian the landlord is so friendly and always does his best to fit you in, even if it's at the last minute. The portions are great and it's very good value for money. The Sunday Carvery is extremely popular for a good reason and it is highly recommended that you book as it is such a favourite with the locals.

The food is a tiny bit more expensive than standard pub grub but the quality, choice, presentation and overall experience was well worth it.
Located in Bishop's Castle about 25 minutes away, this is a must if you are looking for something a bit special. We tried it for lunch and were lucky enough to pick a sunny day so dined in the glorious garden with its spectacular view. This is very definitely restaurant food but the prices are reasonable. The food is beautifully cooked and presented and the waiting staff are extremely attentive without being pushy. We only went inside briefly but it looked well laid out and very clean, as you would expect from an hotel. It is definitely on our list of places to go for special occasions, including well-earned breaks!

This is a lovely place to eat. It's light and airy and it's perfect if you like meat as it has its own butcher. You can select your cut and quantity of meat or alternatively pick from the menu. It's always best to talk to them about what is on offer on the day before you book. We haven't eaten there since lockdown but they did a fantastic steak night on a Friday and their Sunday lunch was definitely a favourite with our boys.

This pub is just a short hop over the Mynd in Church Stretton. You are greeted and served by friendly staff in a beautiful old building with lots of nooks and crannies. There is a pretty beer garden too and the whole place is spick and span. The food is good, honest pub grub at reasonable prices and there's a fantastic selection of craft beers. Booking is essential for evening meals. Always check the opening times or ring to book a table as our local pubs sometimes close on a Monday. One of the pictures that appear in our Guidebook (automatically) is somewhat misleading as it is definitely not next to water but the photo of the entrance to the pub is accurate.

This is one of two pubs in Little Stretton which have been recommended to us by locals and our guests. They have the advantage of being located near the end of the walk off the Long Mynd leading out of Ashes Hollow. Some of our guests enjoy walking from the lodge over to one of the pubs and back. Others prefer to drive to the Shooting Box car park just above us and walk from there. Always check the opening times or ring to book a table as our local pubs sometimes close on a Monday.

This is one of two pubs in Little Stretton. We had a delicious meal there and can highly recommend it along with some of our previous guests and neighbours. They serve seasonal food and pay particular attention to their vegetables both in terms of quality and presentation. It has a real country pub feel and the locals and landlady are very friendly. The food and drink aren't cheap compared with our side of the hill but that's probably to do with the different demographics. Check out the menu on their website and as with all our local pubs, you definitely need to book if you would like to take advantage of the Sunday lunch. This pub is located on the A49 between Shrewsbury and Church Stretton in the nearby village of Leebotwood. It was a recommendation by our son who is a regular there with his friends on Sundays. We tried it and absolutely loved it. The staff are friendly and the food was excellent. It’s far better than standard pub grub and great value for money.

This was a tip from a guest. There's one in Shrewsbury and one in Ludlow. The Ludlow café is by the river and serves healthy British cuisine. According to Trip Advisor in November 2022, it is rated as 5 stars, serves healthy British cuisine, is vegetarian friendly, and has vegan and gluten free options and is #2 of 59 restaurants in Ludlow.

This is our home and is the reason we moved here. It's 8000 acres of absolute bliss whether you like to walk, cycle or ride a horse. It's rarely muddy but be warned as it's usually 3 degrees cooler than in the valleys below and it often serves up a "breeze". You feel so connected to nature up here with the sounds of the wild ponies, sheep and birds and it literally feels like being on top of world when you stop at the Trig Point near Pole Bank as it offers a spectacular panoramic view.

This" dark skies" car park has a wonderful grassy knoll where you can lie back and watch the skies above. It also provides great parking from which you can venture out onto the level walks which cross the top of the Long Mynd. It is actually situated on the Jack Mytton Way.

We love this place as the view is spectacular and the photograph on the cover is taken from this point. It's a nice uphill walk from the Shooting Box car park or alternatively, drive to the T junction on the top of the Mynd and turn towards the Midland Glider Club. There are various car parks or demarcated verges in which you can park.

This is our favourite local walk as it has something for everyone. You can park on the flat (free if you are a National Trust member) and there are a variety of short and long walking options. The reservoir is a quick 10 minutes from the car, past the Hill Fort view point. You can then choose to continue uphill onto the Burway which is the road crossing the Long Mynd. Alternatively, take the longer route to the waterfall which is about 20 minutes from the top car park. Those who can climb the rocky path to the side of the waterfall can make their way upwards towards the Jack Mytton Way. From there you can choose a proper hike or perhaps make your way back off the JMW down the other path into/out of Cardingmill Valley. Another route onto the Burway is at the entrance to the car park on your left as you enter and this often forms part of a circular route for walkers. Our absolute favourite is the very steep path up towards the Iron Age fort (and the Golf Club). There are so many options and these walks are as long or as short as you want which makes it ideal for different likes and abilities. When you finish you can either relax in the NT café or bring your own refreshments and paddle in the shallow brook as it makes its way down towards the town. ** WILD WATER SWIMMING ** If this is your thing then you have come to the right place. If you drive back over the Long Mynd towards Church Stretton, you can either park above the reservoir or drive down into the town and into the National Trust car park and walk from there. The reservoir has a shallow shelf in which to wade into the depths and allows a perfect place to see the sunrise. In fact the sun can get so bright that it's quite blinding if you are swimming towards it so tinted goggles are recommended

Nick and I have not walked this but our son did a lot of walking during lockdown and this is one of his favourites. It's not for the faint-hearted but there are breathtaking views of Shropshire as it's one of the highest points in the county. There are several paths of ascent and keep your eyes peeled for the cave cunningly concealed in one of the outcrops. Apparently the sheep track leading to its entrance will be its only giveaway.

Another beautiful walk just a short hop from the centre of Church Stretton. The best things about these walks is that there is great pub grub to be had at the end of all that effort just a stone's throw away. Some of our guests have even managed a combination of a couple of these hills in the same day sandwiched between two pub meals at different locations in the village below!

This is a fantastic circular walk just above Church Stretton with the added attraction of the Gaer Stone. There is a shortcut back down the steep hill to the car park at the side of the road by the farm buildings but this is VERY slippery in all seasons so take care if you choose this route. If you aren't in any hurry, follow the footpath on the ridge of the hill instead.

The Stiperstones is an absolute must if you enjoy walking. For keen amblers it is within walking distance from the lodge or alternatively drive up the hill and park in its dedicated car park. There are hilly and flat walking options and it is well worth clambering to the top to visit the Devil's Chair and Shepherd's Rock. Beware of walking up there if you can't see the Devil's Chair. Legend has it that the Devil will be sitting on it. However, in all seriousness, you could become dangerously lost. One of our favourite things to do is to take off our shoes and socks and walk over the path rocks in bare feet as it is amazingly invigorating.

This is a wonderfully peaceful place to stop on the way back from Shrewsbury. The car park is found on the road with the White Horse at Pulverbatch on your right. Climbing to the top of the mounds (there are paths) you will find a bench on which to rest and enjoy the wonderful view. There is a very informative noticeboard in the car park and you certainly feel a sense of history. It's one of our places to stop and sit with a flask and a biscuit or two, whatever the season.
