Local Festivals and other Events

Cherry Blossom Capitol of the World Mar 18-27, 2022 Despite its humble beginnings, the festival has become one of the Top 20 Events in the South, Top 50 Events in the U.S., and Top 100 Events in North America. It has grown from a 3-day festival with 30 events to a month-long celebration featuring hundreds of events planned to entertain all ages and backgrounds. The Yoshino cherry trees’ numbers keep growing as the Fickling Family Foundation continues to donate thousands of cherry trees to Macon-Bibb residents each year. Their generosity helps keep Macon’s beauty alive as well as its distinctive title as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World secure. The Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission, established in 1974, has been recognized as being the model program for the nation’s first commission under the Keep America Beautiful system. Mrs. Crayton and the 28-member appointed body seek “to promote public interest in the general improvement of the environment of Macon and Bibb County and to coordinate programs for litter control, beautification, recycling, energy-related needs.” Each March, Macon becomes a pink, cotton-spun paradise of delight as over 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees bloom in all their glory. And for 10 days, festival-lovers are treated to one of the most extravagant displays of springtime color in the nation as they visit the town referred to by Congressional Records as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World.

Travis Jean Emporium was created in 2015 out of a desire to offer an unparalleled retail experience in Macon, Georgia. A place where artisans and artists can showcase locally made goods that speak to the essence that is Downtown Macon. We began working with local farmers, artisans, and artists in late 2015 and quickly found our niche. Today, we proudly offer a curated selection of products from around the world and local art from Macon's most talented artists. We created The Bohemian Den in January 2020 adding an ever-expanding array of bells and chimes, books, candles, crystals and stones, incense, faire trade jewelry, kantha quilts, singing bowls, smudging wands, soapstone, tarot, totas, and more. Travis Jean Emporium is proud to give back to the community that so graciously supports us by partnering with local nonprofits to ensure that Macon is a place we are proud to call home. Smiley’s Markets & Malls was formed in by Ben Campen, Sr. He had a vision of providing a place where anyone and everyone can sell their merchandise at affordable prices to the public. Ben Sr had experience in the flea market business since 1975 and in the early 80’s he decided to build flea markets throughout the Southeast. When pondering a name for the flea markets he wanted something that would reflect a positive light on the business and the people that operated it. Smiley’s was the obvious choice. Contrary to what some people believe, his last name is not Smiley, but he will answer to it almost every time you see him. Smiley’s Macon location opened on July 4, 1985 on 30 acres. Starting with just two buildings totaling 18,000 square feet, it now consists of a facility on 60 acres and well over 100,000 square feet of covered selling stalls with 400 outside selling spaces. Smiley’s Flea Market in Macon, GA is Georgia’s Largest and Finest Flea Market.

Unrivaled Museums

In the mid-1800s, William Butler Johnston was the keeper of the Confederate treasury, but the mansion he built is the real treasure he left behind. Inspired by the mansions of Florence and Rome during a three-year honeymoon in Europe, Johnston and his wife, Anne, spent four years building an 18,000-square-foot Italian Renaissance Revival mansion that is now a National Historic Landmark. Considered the most advanced antebellum building in America for its style, craftsmanship and technological innovations, the magnificent seven-level Hay House has been featured on A&E's "America's Castles." It boasts beautiful 18th-Century furnishings, Italian Carrara Marble fireplaces, some of the country's finest examples of marbleized and trompe l'oeil finishes, a music room with a 30-foot clerestory ceiling, exquisite plaster work with 24-karat gold leafing and spectacular stained glass. The mansion is called Hay House for its last owners and residents, the P.L. Hay family, who conveyed the property in 1977 to The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the country's largest statewide non-profit preservation organization. Hay House is available for functions and guided tours. A museum shop features Victorian inspired gift items; decorative art glass; authentic North Georgia pottery; books of regional interest including Civil War history, history of architectural design and decorative arts and cookbooks; reproductions of architectural remnants such as finials from iron fences and brackets; and Georgia food products. Of special interest are pewter reproductions of mint julep cups designed by Edmund Johnston, brother of Hay House builder William Butler Johnson. The Johnston brothers jointly owned a jewelry business in Macon. Hours: Monday - Saturday 10 am - 4 pm; Sunday 1 pm - 4 pm. Tours are on the hour with the last tour at 3 pm.

Theatre and Fine Arts

Otis Redding was discovered here. Ma Rainey, Cab Calloway, Little Richard and many others also performed in this theater during its run from 1921 to the '70s. It stood silent for 20 years until the City of Macon restored and reopened it in January 1997, as a state-of-the-art film, performance and meeting venue. Now, it pays tribute to African Americans' influence on film and theater. Visitors can experience its original opulence while watching 3-D films. In addition, live musical and theatrical performances occur at night, while the adjoining annex offers function space and a complete catering kitchen for other functions. Restored to its original splendor, The Douglass lives again. Established in 1921, the Douglass Theatre hosted early jazz and blues greats such as Otis Redding, Bessie Smith, James Brown, Ma Rainey and Little Richard while running popular feature length films and serials. Now completely renovated, the Douglass Theatre hosts a variety of events including film presentations and educational performances created by local children. True to its historic reputation as a magnet for the entire community, “The Douglass” draws widely-varied audiences for its 35mm 3D, digital, limited run and premier films as well as for its world-class performance events. We hope you find our website entertaining as well as informative. Feel free to contact us with questions, or better yet, come by for a visit and see the wonders of the historic Douglass Theatre!

The year 2020 was an unprecedented time for everyone, including Bragg Jam. Last summer, we were forced to cancel our Concert Crawl for the first time in twenty years. As our all-volunteer board looks to the summer of 2021, we are faced with similar challenges and uncertainties. Many local venues remain shuttered or still have capacity caps in place. However, in the most authentic spirit of the organization, we must Bragg On. Bragg Jam will present for summer 2021, Bragg On, a free community concert on Coleman Hill. While Bragg On will be smaller in scale than our traditional concert crawl, we believe providing a place for the community to gather and enjoy live music is the best way to safely fulfill our mission of creating, curating, supporting, and promoting live music experiences. The concert will be free to attend and feature local, regional, and national talent as well as food, beverage, and promotional item sales. The free nature of Bragg On means we are relying on generous sponsors with a passion for community and a love of music to help make this event a reality and sustain Bragg Jam until we can sell out indoor venues once again. With a range of sponsorship levels, we hope you will choose to support Bragg Jam while we all keep calm and Bragg On together.” (Note: The following information is about Bragg Jam during a “normal” year. In 2021, Bragg On – a smaller, free concert on Coleman Hill — will be held in its place on July 31.) How Bragg Jam Began. Bragg Jam is a tribute to Macon musicians and brothers Brax and Tate Bragg. The brothers were killed in a 1999 car crash in Texas while on a cross-country trip. Friends and family gathered to remember the brothers in what turned into a big jam session. What is Bragg Jam? Bragg Jam has turned into the area’s largest music festival but it is still small enough to truly enjoy. However, it is a bit different than a traditional music festival where you have a few stages in one large outdoor environment, so read on for the tips you need to know. It’s a Lot to Take In. We went in 2017 and there were 19 different stages and more than 90 bands! That’s a lot of music. And that didn’t include the music pouring out of alleys from other venues. We didn’t even scratch the surface visiting only six of the venues, and one unaffiliated outdoor patio. Get the Schedule. Keep it Close. Be sure you have a brochure with the schedule and map of all the locations. The 19 different stages were located within different buildings in Macon. Many are bars, restaurant patios and the like. Some are normal concert venues, or special events spaces. Bragg Jam does offer a shuttle to the different venues.

Grant's Lounge first opened its doors on February 16, 1971. Located at 576 Poplar Street in Macon, Georgia, the original Grant's Lounge had a seating capacity of 75. From the beginning Grant's Lounge was more than just another night club. Its existence made a loud statement about people and the oneness of human beings. Also, it was from this modest establishment much of what the world now knows as Southern Rock was conceived. Grant's, as the place was popularly known, opened on a Wednesday night. "Crimson Soul", a blue-eyed soul rock group, opened with a packed house. Mr. Grant, Edward Grant Jr., Elizabeth "Liz" Graham, and Maintland Webb beamed with joy as they greeted and served the first night's guests. They had no idea that this was the first night of a living legend. Grant's Lounge was born. Between 1971 and about 1976, guests at Grant's would be exposed to over 100 Rock and Jazz bands. Most of these bands were looking for that "lucky break". Some of them got the break, many others did not make it. The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Wet Willie were among the lucky ones. We've worked hard to create an enhanced entertainment experience for you. Updates Historic Grant's Lounge include an open floor plan to make room for more of our friends and better viewing of LIVE entertainment, state-of-the-art sound system, and an extension of our beloved “Wall of Fame”. Come on down and check us out! Historic Grant’s Lounge has been a staple on the music scene for nearly 5 decades. Deemed the Original Home of Southern Rock, this humble establishment in Macon, GA gave musical starts to giants like the Allman Brothers, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, The Marshall Tucker Band, and countless others. Known for it’s “welcome all” vibe, upon entering the doors, you'll hear the perfect blend of R&B, Rock & Roll, Blues, Bluegrass, and Country Music. https://historicgrants.com/
