You can paddle, bike, and hike the trails of Rocky Mount. The 7-mile Tar River Trail connects three of the city's big parks: Sunset Park, Battle Park, and Martin Luther King Jr Park. Our history: Incorporated in 1867, the community at the falls of the Tar River that became the city of Rocky Mount dates from the middle of the 1700s. Historically strong in rail transportation, textiles, and agriculture, the economy of Rocky Mount has diversified into biomedical pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and logistics.

City Lake

City Lake, located off Sunset Avenue at the Tar River, was first constructed as a Works Progress Administration project under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration in 1937. The lake has undergone many facelifts over the years, with a complete beautification project concluded in 1993. Joggers and walkers make a trek around a half-mile concrete path surrounding the lake, while others relax under the tall hardwoods and pines to feed the exotic waterfowl living around the famous site or cast a line from the large wooden deck that garnishes the west edge of the lake. Other amenities include a gazebo, piers, a bridge to the island, and a fountain. By day or night, City Lake is one of the most beautiful sites in the two counties. Called “a place for us to come together,” City Lake has become a symbol of the Rocky Mount area.

Blount-Bridgers House

(about a 20-min drive to Downtown Tarboro). A Federal-style, circa 1808 plantation house built by Thomas Blount, a prominent Edgecombe County businessman and U.S. congressman. In 1979, the house was adaptively restored and turned into a museum. Today, the first floor is home to a collection of 19th century furniture, furnishings and Edgecombe County memorabilia. Visitors can learn about the history of the town, county and the house itself. The second floor houses the beautiful Hobson Pittman Memorial Gallery, a living museum to Pittman, Edgecombe County’s premier artist (1899-1972). Here, visitors can enjoy the permanent Hobson Pittman Collection of 20th century artwork, as well as exhibits from local, regional, national and international artists.
