Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park in Macon, Georgia, United States preserves traces of over ten millennia of culture from the Native Americans in the Southeastern Woodlands. Its chief remains are major earthworks built before 1000 CE by the South Appalachian Mississippian culture These include the Great Temple and other ceremonial mounds, a burial mound, and defensive trenches. They represented highly skilled engineering techniques and soil knowledge, and the organization of many laborers. The site has evidence of "17,000 years of continuous human habitation." The 3,336-acre park is located on the east bank of the Ocmulgee River. Macon, Georgia developed around the site after the United States built Fort Benjamin Hawkins nearby in 1806 to support trading with Native Americans. For thousands of years, succeeding cultures of prehistoric indigenous peoples had settled on what is called the Macon Plateau at the Fall Line, where the rolling hills of the Piedmont met the Atlantic coastal plain. The monument designation included the Lamar Mounds and Village Site, located downriver about three miles from Macon.

The Cannonball House is located at 856 Mulberry Street in Macon, Georgia, United States and is a historically significant house with a story behind its name. On July 30, 1864, the house coined its name due to damage caused by a cannonball striking the house from a Union Army attack in the American Civil War. The Cannonball House was constructed originally as a planter's townhouse in 1853. It was built by and for Judge Asa Holt. This explains why this house is also known as the "Mansion of the Old South" and the "Home of Judge Asa Holt." The house was built using an authentic Greek revival architectural style and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The recreated meeting rooms of the Adelphean and Philomathean societies are on display inside the house. The entire house is furnished to the 1853-1870 period. The rear of the Cannonball House is occupied by a hand-molded two-story brick kitchen. The upper level of this house served as servants' quarters. Few structures of this type remain in the Southern United States today. A bronze cannon, forged in 1864 at the Macon Arsenal, is on display in front of the Cannonball House.

The Johnston–Felton–Hay House, often abbreviated Hay House, is a historic residence at 934 Georgia Avenue in Macon, Georgia. Built between 1855 and 1859 by William Butler Johnston and his wife Anne Tracy Johnston in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, the house has been called the "Palace of the South." The mansion sits atop Coleman Hill on Georgia Avenue in downtown Macon, near the Walter F. George School of Law, part of Mercer University. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973 for its architectural uniqueness. The 18,000-square-foot, 24-room home was designed by the New York architect T. Thomas and Son. It was built in part by craftsman and artisans brought from Italy who were supervised by local master builder James B. Ayers. It has four levels and is crowned by a three-story cupola. Commissioned by imaginative owners and constructed by the most skillful workers of the time, its technological amenities were unsurpassed in the mid-nineteenth century: hot and cold running water, central heat, a speaker-tube system connecting 15 rooms, a French lift equivalent to today's elevator, in-house kitchen, and an elaborate ventilation system.

During an era that saw Jimmy Carter ascend to the White House and Macon’s own Capricorn Records release hit after hit making music history, the Rookery was just being born. Today the Rookery bustles on, serving Allman Burgers and Jimmy Carter shakes to Maconites and travelers from far and wide. Voted Best Burger in town and featured in Garden and Gun’s “Guide to the South’s best Burgers 2014,” the Rookery’s dining area, outside patio, and renowned bar are always bustling with satisfied patrons. Other noteworthy features are the onion rings, hand-cut fries, milkshakes, and extensive craft beer list. My personal favorite is the OUTKAST STANKONIA FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH! But keep in mind, The Rookery does not accept reservations.

When Maconites seek comfort food, H&H is where they head for it. Founded in 1959 by the late “Mama Inez” Hill and her goddaughter and cousin “Mama Louise” Hudson, H&H has served its no-frills fare to a wide variety of clientele over the years, including the Allman Brothers, civil rights activists, and Oprah Winfrey. The restaurant now operates under the Moonhanger Group and Hudson. While soul food staples are certainly part of the draw, H&H offers some of the best breakfast in Bibb County.

By far my favorite lunch spot! This husband and wife team started their dream November 2007 as a small juice and smoothie bar attached to a fitness facility. Boy did they outgrow the space quickly! Natasha, daughter of fine dining matriarch, Natalia del Basso-Orsini, had food and flavor running through her veins. It was only a matter of time before Natasha took on more. Carl, an artist with a flair for food, assisted in growing the business to the "eatery" it has become. Come see Carl's art and taste their fine epicurean fare at their newest space at The Prado. We promise your taste buds will thank you!
