Fortezza castle was built by the Venetians in the 16th century, and was captured by the Ottomans in 1646. By the early 20th century, many houses were built within the citadel. These were demolished after World War II, leaving only a few historic buildings within the Fortezza. Under Venetian rule, a small harbour was built in Rethymno, which became the third most important city on Crete . On 8 April 1540, a line of fortifications began to be built around the city. The walls were designed by the architect Michele Sanmicheli, and were completed in around 1570.

During the Venetian times the Mosque "Neratzes" used to be a church named ‘Santa Maria'', dedicated to the Mary of Augustans. The little chapel on its west side was dedicated to the body of Christ. In 1657, the Turks turned the temple into a mosque named ‘Gazi Housein" or "Neratze", which also served as an Ottoman seminary. In 1890, the mechanic G. Daskalakis added a large minaret with two stone-made balconies to the building. Today the Mosque "Neratzes" is used as a conservatoire.

The Venetian Harbor of Rethymnon, next to the modern harbor of the city, with the Egyptian lighthouse of Rethymnon is one of the most picturesque areas of the Old Town of Rethymnon. It first operated in the Byzantine period (after 961), but flourished during the Venetian Times. The Venetians in the 14th century started major projects to face the problem of siltation, which holds till today. It is one of the most striking sceneries you can see in the town of Rethymnon and you can combine it with eating at one of the several seaside taverns.

Loggia has been built during the 16th century and was designed by the famous architect Michel Snamicheli. Loggia was an eminent building of the city centre and has been a meeting point for the nobles to discuss political and economical issues. The building is very well preserved; it is square and has arches on its three sides (besides its west side). The consoles of its eaves are spectacular. During the Turkish occupation the loggia became a mosque and a minaret was constructed, which waslater demolished in 1930.

The Rimondi fountain was built in 1626. It covered part of the city's water needs and it is located in the Platanou square, which was then the centre of the Venetian city. It has three water basins, three lion shaped water exits, and three columns crowned by Corinthian capitals bearing a Latin inscription. Today the fountain still springs water through the three lion heads.

Arkadi Monastery is located near the village Amnatos, 23km east of Rethymno. The exact date of the foundation of the monastery is not known, but it is believed that it was actually founded by Byzantine Emperor Arkadios in the 12th century. According to another version, the name is taken after a monk called Arkadios, who first founded the monastery. Moreover, the monastery was called Tsanli Manastir by the Turks (i.e. beneficiary bell), as the Arkadi monastery was the only Cretan monastery that had the right to ring its bells. Arkadi is certainly the most historic monastery of Crete and has become the most sacred symbol of the Struggle of the Cretans for Freedom. It is the theater of the tragic battle of 1866, which opened the way for the liberation of the island in 1898. Indeed, UNESCO has designated Arkadi as a European Freedom Monument.
