Essentials

La Colonia is one of two major supermarkets in Nicaragua (the other being La Union). La Colonia is comparable to shopping at major supermarkets in the States. In fact, aside from being smaller, it is exactly like "Stop and Shop," the major grocery store chain in NJ. This particular Colonia has a nice selection of wine, bears and hard liquors.

Shopping

There is a new market and an old market. Go look in the new tourist market, then shop to buy in the old local market. Prices are 30-40% cheaper in the old market. Basic Spanish and small bills (both US dollars and Cordobas) go a long way in both markets. Bring US denominations between $5-$20, and make sure that all bill are in near mint condition. No vendors will take torn, ragged, tattered, or written-on bills. Many craftsmen work on-site.

The most popular slope to go Volcano Surfing in the world is that of Cerro Negro near Leon. Riders hike up the volcano and slide down, sitting or standing, on a thin plywood or metal board. The Cerro Negro volcano is a young and unique volcano. It is also a unique tourism scenario providing a stunning natural setting, the opportunity to hike an active cone and see its crater, and canopy lines available for visitors.
