The infamous Mary, Queen of Scots spent most of her turbulent life in the Palace - a dramatic and often tragic chapter in the history of the building. She married two of her husbands in the palace. Her private secretary David Rizzio was murdered in her private apartments by a group led by her husband Lord Darnley, who was jealous of Rizzio's influence over Mary. Today the Palace of Holyroodhouse is used as a Royal Palace, but is also open to the public all year round. It also is a centrepoint for celebrating the best of Scotland. This is most evident in The Queen’s ‘Holyrood Week’ of engagements, undertaken every year from the end of June to the beginning of July. Her Majesty attends several engagements around the country to celebrate Scottish culture, history and achievement.

Arthur’s Seat happens to be one of the best places in the city to watch the sun rise and is well worth the early start. This dormant volcano requires a moderate 45-minute hike to the top. Your reward? Unrivalled panoramic views of Edinburgh, including the castle, the Pentland Hills and East Lothian.

With over 10,000 plants, 10 glasshouses and a history stretching back 350 years, the garden is one of the best ways to spend a relaxing couple of hours in the city. If you’re visiting in the winter, don’t miss its twinkling festive light show.

This is one of my personal favorites when it comes to museums. Often overlooked, it offers a wonderful snapshot of Victorian architecture influenced by high Venetian style and an eclectic sense of Scottish history through the people who made it. Its Cafe Portrait is perfect for working away on your laptop while enjoying a coffee, early lunch or afternoon tea.

If you love walking, take a short 10 min bus ride from Princes Street to Cramond village where you can enjoy a lovely walk along the sea, and when the tide is low, across it, walking alongside anti-submarine pylons from World War II to Cramond island. The view from there is breathtaking!

No visit to Edinburgh is complete without experiencing the best of Scottish food by not one but two local Michelin star chefs who decided to combine their talents here. Call or book online sooner rather than later.
