Sightseeing

The Empire Mine was the largest of the dozens of mines that operated in the area. You can tour the beautiful grounds & the owner's home. He also had another home called Filoli near SF. Take a very informative tour at 1pm and which will take you down into a gold mine! Miles and miles of hiking trails sit atop miles and miles of underground mine shafts that yielded more gold than any other mine in California.

A great place for a swim, hike, or a picnic. See the following Bridgeport Covered Bridge article for more info.
One of the most beautiful bridges in Nevada County, if not in all of the Gold Country is the Bridgeport covered bridge on the South Fork of the Yuba River in the South Yuba River State Park. It is one of the longest covered bridges in existence. There is a small museum and docents on weekends. The bridge was originally constructed in 1862 and was part of the Virginia Turnpike Company Toll Road that served the northern mines and traffic to and from Virginia City and the Comstock Lode in Nevada. The bridge is 230 feet (70 m) long. Bridgeport Bridge, or “Wood’s Crossing” and was built as part of a toll road. The BEACH near the COVERED BRIDGE There is a nice beach next to the bridge where you will find kids (and adults) swimming in the river. Picnic tables are also nearby. The Hwy 49 Bridge Another beautiful venue for the South Yuba River is north of Nevada City on Hwy 49, and also about 12 miles from here. Hiking and swimming there, too.
