Carrboro is a former mill village adjacent to the university town, Chapel Hill. With cheaper real estate than it's more upscale neighbor, Carrboro became an artist haven during the 1990s and early 2000s. Today, it's a hub of creativity hosting some of the Triangle's best restaurant and music venues. The downtown is walkable and bike friendly and only a mile from the UNC campus.
