Nature

Special animals live in a natural environment in Lelystad Nature Park. You can come face to face with a wisent, wild boar, red deer, Przewalski's horse or even an elk. Storks, otters, beavers, moufflons and Father David's deer also live in the park. The animals live in large habitats so spotting the animals is always a challenge. The beautifully maintained park has miles of good cycling and walking trails along the animals. The park has a restaurant with a fantastic view over the central lake and there is a visitor center where you can buy a map, rent a bicycle or obtain information. Groups can explore the park led by a guide by boat or tour vehicle.
If you go to the park by car, please notify the owners of the listing to be able to park free of charge at the park.

A large wetland area with reed plains, rugged grasslands, ponds, surrounded by forests: a true bird paradise of international value. These are the Oostvaardersplassen, part of the Nieuw Land National Park. More than 50 years ago, nature in southern Flevoland created this vast swamp area. Geese, spoonbills and cormorants soon found their way to the Oostvaardersplassen, as did deer, foxes, hares, bats and butterflies. And since 2006, even the white-tailed eagle nests there. In this bird-rich swamp area, people and nature work together in a special way. You will encounter Heck cattle, Konik horses and red deer along the way. They keep the grasslands open in a natural way with their grazing. And they in turn demand care and management. Discover this bird-rich wetland and experience how each season has its own dynamics and surprising developments.

Lake Markermeer (700 km2) was split off from Lake IJsselmeer in 1976, when a dam was built between Enkhuizen and Lelystad. Disconnected from the sea and rivers, the lake became a stagnant system. The lake has barely any natural shores, and its waters are often extremely turbid as wind and waves churn up the accumulated sediments from the relatively shallow lake floor (2-4 m deep). As a result, fish and bird populations have declined dramatically. The construction of this archipelago, these new islands give nature a major boost with newly created habitats for water plants, shellfish, birds and fish. Islands with natural shores and spawning areas will be built with sand, clay and silt dredged from the lake. This way a robust, clear-watered nature area arises in the heart of the Netherlands: a natural jewel where migrating birds, fish and other animals will thrive.
