Our story begins in 1920 at 51st & Yale Ave. at the Tulsa County Poor Farm, where poor people worked for their food, received health services and had a roof over their heads. But in 1935, FDR introduced the national welfare system and eventually, the farm became obsolete and too expensive to maintain. In 1958, oilman J.A. LaFortune saw the potential of the old farm land and donated $250,000 to Tulsa County to build a park. He did so because he “wanted to give back to the city that had been so good to me.” LaFortune’s passion for the creation of public county parks extended to his friend Claude Chandler, who he convinced to donate 100 acres of his quarry for a west side park. [Chandler Park] On October 16, 1960, LaFortune Park was opened to the public. As the first county park in Oklahoma, the 270-acres features over 700 trees, 11 ponds, and more than 100,000 visitors a year. There is an 18-hole championship golf course, a lighted driving range, pro shop and the only lighted 18-hole par 3 in Oklahoma. It’s a spectacular setting for all occasions with indoor and outdoor event spaces.
North east of the golf course is the nationally recognized Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park. Built in 1970, it has grown from 6 courts to 21 lighted outdoor courts, 3 air-conditioned indoor courts and a full-service pro shop with locker rooms.
LaFortune Park also features a 5k-walking/running trail that encompasses the entire park, frequently used for team building, corporate challenges and fundraising events.

The 2.5 acre dog park is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Check our website under “HOURS” for open days. They change depending on the months of the year. All breeds are welcome to the park, but your dog must be at least 6 months old. All dogs over 6 months old must be spayed or neutered. A complete set of rules is posted at the park entrance and inside of the park. Admission is free to the public. No child under 12 years of age can lawfully enter the park.

If you made a list of Tulsa's quirkiest buildings, odds are the Cave House would be right at the top. Located a few blocks west of downtown, the Cave House has a unique history dating back to the 1920s when it was originally built as the Cave Garden Restaurant. During the day, the restaurant would serve food on picnic tables outside, but after night fell the restaurant became a speakeasy. Patrons would go in a secret tunnel through the fireplace that led all the way back to a big room under the hill. The tunnel to the secret room has since been sealed off with concrete for reasons unknown.
Today, the house is somewhat of a museum dedicated to a piece of Tulsa's history. With advance notice, you can schedule a guided tour of the house to see its meandering halls and extremely steep staircase. Sometimes called the Flintstone House, the outside is marked by a sign offering "I've always wanted to see inside" tours. While on a tour, you'll get to see this one-of-a-kind architectural attraction and hear stories of its colorful history.
The current owner has decorated the interior with a nod to the home's previous occupants. Visitors will see a set of minivan seats in memory of two mechanics, as well as a key tree for the mysterious key woman who is said to have lived in the house and still haunts it. While in the house, several visitors reported losing their keys, which later turned up near a hill where no one had been walking. Others have reported seeing the ghost of the original owner in the parlor. This unique structure was once featured on HGTV's "Home Strange Home" and in the book "Weird Oklahoma."
