Food scene

One must do (ok every thing is amazing here but...) order the MATIZ SARDINES ON TOAST! Delicious fare and a really cool rustic yet elevated decor. Wine is great, outdoor dining is great. The servers really know their stuff. Reservations recommended. Two blocks from the house.

Lordy, I have eaten enough fish at this pub to replenish the endangered populations. The serving staff can be ornery fyi, but the fried fish is to die for. Who cares if they don't change the oil that frequently--I'm kidding but I suspect that is the secret ingredient? Seriously. Get an old fashioned and a basket of fish. Get the fries because if you WILL order them at some point during the visit. Fish tacos are probably my #1 but that is only when I feel like diluting the fish ;) Local haunt, local hipsters and older folk mingle in the same place. A refreshing scene from the high end restaurants on the rest of Stone Way. Across the street from Whale Wins. If the line is terrifying at WW go across the street. You won't be disappointed.

Our neighborhood grocery store. Non-pretentious. No one will judge if you walk out with Fruity Pebbles is what I mean. Has a nice natural food section upstairs. Nice plants too, and flower shop. They also sell balloons which has come in handy on occasion.

Sightseeing

The Fremont Troll is basically an adult jungle gym. In his clutches is a VW Bug to give you an idea of size. Lucky for you all you have to do is walk to the west on 36th and you'll run into him. Great when heading to Fremont itself. Hopefully his glass eye is cataract-free when you visit.

Do you like novelty socks? I thought so. I haven't ever really seen a shop fully devoted to socks but if that is your thing, don't forget to check it out!

Got a dog? Need a walk? Or child or adult-want to check a super fun and cool jungle gym? Yeah, you know you do....head up for a few laps and to check out the little kids playing kid soccer, or the sometimes in operation water park-wading pool in the summer. Play tennis? There are two tennis courts and usually are not too busy in the off season...summer-forget it but shoulder seasons you can usually find it empty. No lights however. Great place for a picnic, great place to eat your Molly Moon's ice cream too and figure out what kind of dog you want in the future.

3.5 miles around--this is the Central Park of Seattle. Everyone is out and about, rain or shine. The dogs, the babies, the grandparents. The couples, the internet blind dates, the UW students, the insane running clubs, the people who like to read, and if you are lucky the guy who gives free Spanish lessons. Rent paddleboards or canoes, or kayaks. There is a beach for swimming and if you're training for your triathalon you can lap it by yourself (suggest a float behind you) as long as you are within 50 feet of shore. Once a year there is Green Lake Swim--it's a 1/2 mile or 1 mile race around the solstice. Entry and pre-payment required. Check out the Evans pool if you prefer your water chlorinated. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays there is free ping pong in the basement of the pool building brought to you by Green Lake Table Tennis Club. Pretty fun. You will see some crazy good players too. https://www.glttc.org/ At the north of the Lake there are BB courts and soccer fields. At the south end is a stadium if you like to run stairs. There are public bathrooms all around the lake. Green Lake use to host all kinds of water ballet shows and on some of the signage around the loop you can see some vintage photos.

If plastic things made in China aren't your thing, don't go here. If you like plastic poop, rubber finger puppets, and novelty fun items, you MUST go here. Even if you don't buy anything, you will at least laugh your head off. Free entertainment!

Best and closest intermediate to expert skiing in the area. Most affordable as well. It's an hour from town. Take off after work and hit the POW! For those who are less aggressive the same area has beginner skiing at the Summit at Snoqualmie. The whole family or friend groups' abilities can be accommodated here.

Funny name. Good views. A moderate hike relatively close to the city. You can see the local paragliders take off from the top while enjoying your snack. You can do it too! Just secure a spot with Seattle Paragliding. SO FUN

Yes, you read that right. You and 5 of your friends can ride in a hot tub boat for 2 hours, in the rain, in the dark. Yep. Wild, right?

The lavender capital of WA state, Sequim is in what we call a rain shadow. If it's rainy in Seattle you stand a good chance of finding sun here. It's a great stop for food and all things lavender while making your way around the Olympic Peninsula.

Twilight fan? Too young/old to know what this was? Well, that's ok. All you need to know is that it's the rainiest place in the continental US and a tv show was set here about dueling vampire and zombie gangs. A love story. Everyone was very very pale. Forks is a cool stop. Once and still a lumber town with a sobering side of the road memorial for those killed in this industry. You'll find a fabulous grocery store, coffee shop, outdoor supply, sporting goods and hardware all in one store in Forks. Go there.
