True Creole/Cajun Soul Food! Right near the WWII Museum! At lunch no reservation needed, but probably at night, it's a good idea. Also you can sit at a small bar and see the kitchen in action

Great, great food! Something for everyone! Casual at lunch & no need for reservations. A little dressier at night, and recommend reserving a table. Also, on Magazine, not a spot a lot of tourists know about. And of course--GREAT FOOD!

Yummy Mexican Food! Only a few blocks from Historical Haven. Tamales are my favorite (They are huge, and I can take some home for a snack later.) There's live music, and a great patio. Lunch and dinner.

This bar is in the Hotel Monteleon. The bar actually rotates! Very cool! Great martinis, cosmopolitans, or any cocktail really. Always live music--usually jazz early on, then a bit more rowdy later on. Dancing, too!

Everything is here, and it's not quite as touristry (e.g., crowded). Food, lots of live music--jazz, blues, harder stuff. Think dancing in the streets! Open air restaurants and bars!

Although I live here, I never get tired of Pat O's Hurricanes! Get in the glass, and take it home. There's a piano bar inside, and an awesome patio outside. Great place for meeting people from all over.

Sightseeing

Incredible museum with many veterans volunteering there. There's the Victory Belles show saluting the veterans, and a good restaurant, too. Pretty much the brain child (and main funder) of Tom Hanks

There are a plethora of artists and crafts people there who work independently for cash. They paint, they make handmade jewelry, rosaries, etc. Very cool to talk with as they are locals. Also right in front of the Cathedral, and you can tour if so inclined.

Parks & Nature

Often compared to Central Park in NYC, this is one of the most beautiful places in NOLA. Lakes, amusement park for kids, paddle boats, kayaking, and an occasional festival. NOMA is located here as well as sculpture gardens, and lots of peaceful trails. There are paths for jogging and places to work out under the beautiful oaks.

Located on beautiful St. Charles Avenue, the park includes trails for running and walking, fountains where you can meditate, and a great zoo behind it. Beautiful trees--even survived Katrina!

Arts & Culture

Within walking distance of Historical Haven, NOMA is more than a gallery. It has some of the world's best exhibits, but also, there are often classes (e.g. culinary) and multiple activities going on. Beautiful architecture along makes the trip worthwhile.

Shopping

Costume shops, boutiques, bars, grab a bite, galleries, antiques, artisans--this shopping is all here. You will avoid the tourist prices in the French Quarter. You may see some colorful characters, and find some terrific finds! Oh, and there's an occasional street festival going on!
