The Byzantine castle of Trikala (fortress) was built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD, on the ruins of the acropolis of ancient Trikki. During the Turkish rule, it was repaired by the Turks and used as a fortress. The fortress presents a typical form of Byzantine fortification. Its wall includes five towers and several small battlements. Internally, it is divided in steps, with transverse walls, into three diazomes. The main entrance opens on the west side of the first floor, with a semi-circular stone enclosure and an iron gate. Its interior is adorned by a pond with a fountain and small bridges. A cafe-restaurant operates in the same space. To the east there is a stone staircase for direct access to the old town. On the second floor rises the central tower, 33 meters high, with the famous clock of Trikala, a symbol of the city. The view from its top level is unique, while inside there is a photographic exhibition on the history of the city. In the same courtyard there is an open-air theater, where various cultural events take place in the summer. Finally, in the third diazoma, there is the small inner fortress (ic kale) which was the last refuge of the defenders. It is located on top of the hill and is reinforced by four towers. Varousi, the most historic district of Trikala, stretches around the castle walls, while Manavika, where most of the city's restaurants are located there, is a little further down. These two areas are today the old city.
