South Freeport Village was known for its shipbuilding years ago; it is the site where the tower of Casco Castle still stands. Sitting in a prominent position overlooking the bay, the tower – which measures 100 feet high – was built by a local man, Benjamin Franklin Dunning. It was quite a task to get the stones for the construction up the steep hill, from where the views across the bay are quite stunning.
