At the southern end of Opoutere Beach and the entrance to the Wharekawa Estuary is a sandpit.This is a breeding sanctuary for the endangered New Zealand Dotterel and the Variable Oyster Catcher.Other seabirds can also be seen here.

A long wild beach where you can occassionally spot a dolphin or 2. A short walk through the forest will take you to the beautiful beach
