At this contemporary art gallery, you can book onto special Crib Notes tours of the current exhibition, designed for parents with babies and toddlers to engage little ones and stop parents fretting about being noisy and disruptive in the usually quiet gallery setting. It’s basically for people who like art and also happen to have children. Get on their mailing list and book a family workshop in advance. They’re brilliant, and you actually get to work with the artist. Last time we went, we made elaborate masks and headdresses, then there was a parade and a little disco.

Art - lots of it. Always enjoyable exhibitions, not overwhelming like Tate. Easily accessible straight up from Brockley. In East London, close to markets, best curries, 'hipster' bars you can avoid

The Whitechapel Art Gallery was founded in 1901 to bring great art to the people of east London. Internationally acclaimed for its exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and its pioneering education and public events programmes, the Gallery has premiered international artists such as Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Nan Goldin, and provided a showcase for Britain’s most significant artists from Gilbert & George to Lucian Freud, Peter Doig to Mark Wallinger.

It's right next door to Aldgate Tube Station. It's small and interesting, with great, regular exhibitions. Best one I've seen was 'therapy', curated by a Mexican artist and psychology students (London). It was VERY interesting (but then I am a psychologist!). It also now has a great cafe on the ground floor!
