You are never too far from the sea in Auckland and in less than an hour from Auckland City you will find yourself amidst the wild west coast beaches, where the Tasman Sea meets long, vast stretches of black sand. Visit Muriwai Beach to see the impressive clifftops and gannet colonies or head to Piha, a popular surf beach, and Karekare, made famous as the backdrop for the film The Piano.

Another 'westie' beach famous for its Gannet colonies. It's also the start of a great walk from Bethell's Beach to Muriwai (Te Henga Walkway)
Muriwai Beach is a favorite beach near Auckland and is one of the best beaches on the north island. This stunning coastline is not only beautiful but actually home to a very impressive Gannet colony.
Muriwai Beach extends 60 kilometres to the north - a line of black sand between the thundering surf and the sand hills is a great place to walk and unwind. This spot is a stunning place to watch the sun go down. Up over the hill at Maori Bay is the gannet colony and you can walk along the track to it and look down at the birds and chicks (August - March)
