14-min drive: Take a walk on the wild side in this wildlife conservation area established in 1951 under the authority of the Migratory Bird Conservation Act of 1929. The refuge consists of 146,188 acres (226 square miles) ofEverglades ecosystems including a mosaic of wet prairies, sawgrass ridges, sloughs, tree islands, cattail communities, and a 400-acre cypress swamp. These lands provide habitat (Food, water, shelter, and space) for more than 250 species of birds, 60 species of reptiles and amphibians, 40 species of butterflies, and 20 types of mammals. The refuge also provides habitat and protection for endangered and threatened wildlife such as the American alligator, snail kite, and wood stork. Migratory birds such as Neotropical songbirds, secretive marsh birds, shorebirds, raptors, and waterfowl winter at the refuge, along with a great variety of year-round resident wading birds and other wildlife. Through refuge programs and facilities, visitors can enjoy a variety of educational and wildlife-oriented recreational opportunities such as guided birdwatching and interpretive wildlife tours. The refuge is located seven miles south off of SR-7, west of the city of Boynton Beach, in Palm Beach County, Florida. Palm Beach County is one of the largest counties in Florida. The refuge is located west of U.S. Highway 441, south of U.S. Highway 80, and 15 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean. Reasons to go: ~ A 10-mile hiking trail that goes straight west, deep into the Everglades ~ A 12-mile bicycle trail going north along the refuge's eastern boundary that will take you tothe refuge headquarters in Boynton Beach ~ A paved boat launch into the refuge's freshwater fishing heaven ~ A concession that offers airboat rides in Water Conservation Area 2A (Airboats are not permitted in the wildlife refuge) ~ A "beach" where private airboats are launched, many destined for hunting shacks scattered throughout the conservation area. ~ Fishing holes are everywhere, whether angling from shore, below the locks or from a boat.

This is a great place to enjoy Florida's natural habitat! See gators native birds and enjoy the sun while you walk the paths of this beautiful refuge.

Good spot to find wildlife, alligators, and beautiful sunsets. Bring mosquito repellent.

This is where you go to see the Everglades. There is a nature center, a boardwalk trail and miles of walking trails. This is a great place to go bird watching and to see alligators. If you go all the way to the boat ramp dock you can usually see a gator hanging around trying to get some fish scraps from the fishermen.
