The second-oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere (the oldest is on the island of Curaçao), peaceful St Thomas Synagogue is a National Historic Landmark. The current building dates from 1833, but Jews have worshipped here since 1796, from Sephardic Jews from Denmark to today’s 110-family Reform congregation. The temple floor is made of sand to symbolize the flight of the Israelites out of Egypt and across the desert. There’s a tiny museum in the back room.

One of the oldest continuously-running synagogues on U.S. soil and the second-oldest in the western hemisphere.
2nd oldest Jewish Synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. Oldest synagogue under the US flag
The St. Thomas Synagogue is the oldest synagogue building in continuous use under the American flag, the second oldest synagogue in the Western hemisphere -- and one of only five synagogues in the world to have sand on the floor (deliberately). Fascinating history and a beautiful setting, the synagogue is actually the fourth most visited tourist site on island. (And in the interest of full disclosure: Julie's husband, Michael Feshbach, is the rabbi there; the congregation is the reason they came to St. Thomas).
