Old and new meet in dramatic fashion at the stunning Maude. Originally built to produce wine, this charming stone villa was recently renovated with a contemporary eye to create a memorable contrast between historic Sicilian architecture and modern Italian style. Set in a quiet garden a short drive from the nearest town, this luxury four-bedroom vacation rental makes a gorgeous backdrop for an intimate wedding, indulgent honeymoon or family reunion, or a wonderfully convenient base for exploring the Catania area.

The villa’s rugged stone walls and lush trees create a private oasis that’s laid out around a heated saltwater infinity pool. Spend your holiday at Maude lounging by the pool, resting in the shade of the glass-walled sunroom or strolling around the manicured grounds. Rinse off in the outdoor shower before heating up the barbecue to try out local seafood, selecting a glass from the indoor wine fridge and sitting down at the al-fresco dining area, next to an original well. Though the property has plenty of historic charm, it also has plenty of modern perks, from air conditioning to Wi-Fi.

Inside the villa, stone walls meet panes of glass, and a sleek fireplace shares space with a fresco-style painted ceiling in an imaginative blend of ancient and contemporary. White floors and walls create a gallery-like atmosphere for traditional details and sculptural furnishings, from a stretched-out sectional and farmhouse-style wooden dining table to yellow Masters dining chairs. The fresh, monochromatic color scheme continues in the fully equipped kitchen.

Each of the four bedrooms at Maude has a queen bed; there are three with en-suite bathrooms and one with a shared bathroom. Not only do the bedrooms have the same lively mix of traditional rustic architecture and colorful, iconic modern pieces, but most have extras such as a walk-in closet or a sitting area and fridge.

From the villa’s setting on the slopes of Mount Etna, it’s easy to explore the vineyards, countryside and beaches of Sicily. Explore the streets of the seaside city of Acireale, 10 km away, indulge in an oceanfront dinner in Catania, 17 km away, or follow a trail up the mountain, 21 km away, if you dare. It’s also worth taking a day trip to see the port of Messina, 87 km away, or the Greek ruins in Syracuse, 88 km away. At the end of your trip, plan on a 36 km drive from Maude to Catania International Airport.
