Best Restaurants in Green River

If you're looking for a quick delicious bite to eat on your way out of town, La Pasadita is your best bet. My family and I absolutely love an al pastor torta with a cup of cold horchata and you can never go wrong with their tacos.

Tamarisk is a local favorite with great views of the river. It serves mostly American dishes with some Mexican as well. If you need a suggestion for what to eat - I strongly recommend the Southwestern Navajo Flatbread (with green sauce) listed on their specials as well as the Mushroom & Swiss Burger.

Green River Activities

If you love golf/disc golf and great views of a not-so-green river, then Green River Golf Course has got you covered. It's a great way to spend your time on a hot summer day. If the day feels a little too hot, just jump in the water since the course winds right by our local boat ramp.

Jenkstar is an abandoned commune that focused on making art from abandoned materials.... It's basically what would happen if burning man didn't burn all of their junk. It's fun and creative and a little bit of a dump, but definitely worth a visit if you can ignore all the trash.

The Green River Launch Complex, a.k.a. our abandoned missile base has often been called Area 51, but it's actually Area 54. Check it out if you have any interest in a place that used to house and launch Athena RTV missiles. It's fun, but not for the whole family. Definitely do not bring small children to any of these sites.

Our very own fresh water beach! Swaseys is a large swathe of very soft sand next to a quiet stretch of river. I love playing volleyball, spike ball or any other ball here as well as paddle boarding when I've got the time. This is definitely the best spot near town to cool down and relax after a long day of hiking.

The Golden Ratio, locally known as The Finger, is an art piece by Australian artist Andrew Roger. I honestly can't describe myself so I'll allow the title to do it for me. It's a pile of cement blocks. The one on top is supposedly plated with gold, but we all know that someone would have stolen it if that were true. Check it out for a quick, silly photo op.

Crystal Geyser is a little bit less of a geyser these days, but it's still worth checking out if you're satisfied with an afternoon gush that doesn't get higher than 3 or 4 feet. The pools that surround it are crusted with a colorful travertine and are honestly the more interesting sight.

This is easily my favorite rock formation around Green River and yet it's often the least visited by tourists. The Swell is viewable from any high point in town, but is best seen up close from the viewing area off of I-70 or from the turn off to Black Dragon Canyon.

Absolutely stunning rock art that also happens to be the most accessible in our area. After a short drive on I-70, visitors just have to drive through Thompson Springs and into the canyon where signs will direct you to walls covered in aging art made by three distinct tribal groups who lived in the area: the Utes, Fremont, and Archaic peoples. As always, please do not touch/scratch/alter the art in any way.

Black Dragon Canyon is named for Dragon rock art that the canyon contains. This epic canyon is deep and cool, but only accessible by vehicle for a short drive. Off-roading vehicles will get much further, but the drive will be slow. The wall art is a major feature of the canyon, but was recently altered by a tourist and is no longer as clear as it once was. That said, make sure to visit the panel while you can! A small, fairly low cave is also located off to the left of the Dragon and is very popular with families. Please note, the cave requires a steep, but very short hike to access. The cave is not marked with a sign, but the trail up to it is fairly visible.

Moonshine Canyon is a slot canyon located 45 minutes south of Green River. Its narrow trail makes for a fun hike for active visitors with older children. Please note, all visitors must be able to climb up and down certain sections of the canyon. The climb does not require rope or repelling, but some experience with climbing/scrambling is necessary. Visitors must also be aware that slot canyons are EXTREMELY dangerous if rain is in the forecast. Do not visit any slot canyons if you know there will be rain as these canyons will fill rapidly with run off and getting caught in the wash can be deadly.

Coal Canyon is the easiest way to get access to the top of our local Bookcliffs. This drive is only possible for off roading vehicles with decent clearance, but is completely worth it if you love beautiful views! Fun fact, a certain someone's great grandfather made moonshine in Coal Canyon during prohibition.

Best Restaurants in Moab

This is my family's favorite place to eat in Moab and if you love Thai food, it'll be your favorite too! We always recommend the Drunken Noodles or Massaman Curry, but everything is delicious here.

Sunset Grill is aptly named because it has got the best views of the sunset and best food off the grill in all of Moab. Fun fact, the building was originally the home of Charlie Steen, Moab's first uranium millionaire, and it has a lot of interesting artifacts related to that history inside.

National Parks

Capitol Reef is often overlooked by our visitors but is a spectacular national park with geology. We recommend Cassidy Arch Trail, Hickman Bridge, and Capitol Gorge. As always, take plenty of water, wear a hat and put on sunscreen!

State Parks

Have you ever wanted to act out scenes from Galaxy Quest? Then Goblin Valley is a must see because its one of the only places to do it. The rock formations are spectacular in this park and there are endless possibilities for kid friendly activities (hide & seek, capture the flag, tag, etc.). Be sure to visit the Three Sisters and the Goblin's Lair while you're there!

Consejos para la ciudad

Qué debes empacar

Bring hiking shoes/boots!

Bring hiking shoes or boots on any hiking trail you go on, but avoid wearing anything waterproof unless you absolutely know rain is in the forecast. Our climate is very dry and especially hot in the spring and summer so waterproof shoes just end up feeling very sweaty here.
Qué debes empacar

Wear hats and sunglasses

We have mostly blue skies in Utah so it can be very bright and visitors can get very very burned. I recommend wearing hats when you're outdoors and keeping the sun off with light weight long sleeved shirts when possible.
Qué debes empacar

Drink water!

Dehydration is one of the top reasons for medical emergencies in our area. Please bring and drink water wherever you go. Active hikers of average build will need to consume about one liter of water every two hours so pack accordingly!
