Hilbre Islands are the three tidal islands lying at the mouth of the Dee Estuary - Little Eye, Middle Eye and Hilbre. They are one of the most beautiful locations for walking in Wirral, or spotting rare and endangered wildlife. Hilbre Islands are also important as a stopping-off point for the twice-yearly migration of birds along the west coast of Britain. On the island is the Hilbre Island Bird Observatory. The summer months also provide a perfect opportunity to see Grey Seals swimming just off-shore, bobbing their heads above the water and watching those on the island. If weather and tides allow, taking a walk out to Hilbre Island is an absolute must when you’re in Wirral, and an experience you will never forget. The Islands are cut off from the mainland by the tide for up to five hours out of every twelve and so, before planning a visit to the Islands it is advisable to contact the Wirral Country Park Visitor Centre (after 10am 7 days a week).

The Hilbre Islands are an archipelago consisting of three islands at the mouth of the estuary of the River Dee, the border between England and Wales at this point. The islands are administratively part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral (West Kirkby) They are a Local Nature Reserve. If you are fan of seals and beautiful landscapes, this hidden gem is definitely worth to visit! Ps: check tide time before your visit

Excellent walk where you can see seals basking on the sand banks, but make sure you understand the tide times, so you don't get cut off. Read the signs at West Kirby Marine Lake

The Hilbre Islands truly are one of the most beautiful locations for walking in Wirral, or spotting rare and endangered wildlife. The islands are an archipelago, and classed as one of just 43 unbridged tidal islands in the UK that can be reached on foot from the mainland. Hilbre Islands are situated at the mouth of the Dee Estuary, which is one of the ten most important estuaries in Europe for overwintering wildfowl and waders. Hilbre Islands are also important as a stopping-off point for the twice-yearly migration of birds along the west coast of Britain. On the island is the Hilbre Island Bird Observatory. The summer months also provide a perfect opportunity to see Grey Seals swimming just off-shore, bobbing their heads above the water and watching those on the island. They pay close attention, as once the public leaves as the tide comes in, the Seals come ashore.

You have to see this beautiful place to believe it. Only a short (very frequent) train or bus ride from the centre of Liverpool. Takes about 40 green, leafy minutes to get to W Kirby. Hilbre is 3 small islands which gain in size and interest as you progress across the wide golden sands at low tide.. Free to visit. Best in spring, autumn and summer. Take a picnic, suncream and water on a hot day and prepare to chill out after a gorgeous 3 mile walk (to the farthest point) + 3 miles back (takes about 1 hour. Watch the high tide times at Hilbre. Info available on the beach and online and off you go! West Kirby is a lovely place with the marina and the White Lion pub, which has the best beer garden!
